Yelp Orlando Brings Non Profits and Potential Volunteers Together in One Room With Booze

Yelp Orlando's Colleen Burns appeared on Episode #3 of "The Daily City
With Mark Baratelli" to talk with us about "Yelp Helps." WATCH NOW

Yelp Orlando, the site with audience-written reviews on everything from dog walkers to food truck taste tests to art shows, is matching you up with your ideal non profit organization at Yelp Helps tonight, Friday November 5, 2010, 6pm-8pm at the Orlando Science Center. RSVP required.

A bunch of non profits will be on hand all in one room available to speak with you about their org and how you can volunteer with them. If you've been wanting to volunteer around town but haven't because you're lazy like me, waiting for them all to be in one place so I don't have to google my fingers off, nows your chance!

The groups will have reps to speak with, information to hand out and of course, chances to join in the volunteering fun. Here are some of the participating non profits: One Brick Orlando, Ourlando, Relay For Life, Brightside Events, A Gift For Teaching, Pet Rescue by Judy, Mel's Bad Girls Club, Orlando Science Center, Stand Up For Kids Orlando, The Dream Center Orlando, Florida School of Holistic Living, The Power Promise Organization, Global Hope Network International, The Mustard Seed of Central Florida, Arts and Cultural Alliance of Central Florida, Orlando Shakespeare Theater in Partnership with UCF.

Yelp Orlando is going an extra step and making this event FUN with free drinks, snacks and more from Honest Tes, Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka, VnC Cocktails, Infusion Tea, Chocolate Provovaeur, Funky Monkey Wine Company, Bananas, A Modern American Diner, Sprinkles Custom Cakes and (our favorite) The Bees Knees Sweet Treats.

There will also be live beats by DJ A-Rock, live painting by Steph Wood, live stand-up comedy by Mike Charette and Mark "Jiggy" Jigarjian and some "treats" (their word not mine) from Fresh Med Spa.

Also, as a special treat for the straight ladies and gay men present, Peter Murphy, Orlando's most attractive human being, will be broadcasting live with his show, Orlando Live.

Produce to the People and more chances to help

This past Saturday morning the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida piloted their brand new Produce to the People program at Victory World Outreach in Maitland. They delivered a truckload of produce to a team of volunteers who handed it out immediately. "We wanted to focus on fresh produce for this program because that can be the most difficult for our clients to have access to on a limited budget." They're doing two more of these "Produce to the People" events this month and could use the volunteers.

Mad Cow Theatre needs volunteers for Orlando Cabaret Festival

Mad Cow Theatre is putting together the 7th Annual Orlando Cabaret Festival and they need volunteers:
"...Preparations are underway for the 7th Annual Orlando Cabaret Festival running April 30 - May 10, 2009. The reason we (are looking for volunteers this early) is because we are applying again for financial support through Orange County and it is a requirement to show demonstrated support from the community for our project. By pledging your support now, you demonstrate the high level of support we receive from the community which is a very important requirement of the Orange County Tourist Tax Development Grant.

...We are asking that you take a moment to consider your desired amount of involvement in this year's festival, and submit that amount of time in writing. In order to satisfy specific grant needs, we are hoping for a total of 1,000 hours pledged. These hours can be spent ushering/ticket taking (as many of you already do), helping sell/pick-up concessions, organizing merchandise, greeting patrons, or administrative assistance before and after the festival. Of course we realize the festival is more than 7 months away and it’s difficult for anyone to pinpoint specific availability. Specific scheduling details will happen as the festival approaches. At this time, we really need to demonstrate to Orange County a sense of commitment from our volunteers in the community.

If you can help us, please copy and paste the form below into an email to be filled out and sent back ASAP to volunteers@madcowtheatre.com. Specifically, we are asking for pledges in blocks of 5, 10, 30, or 50 hour increments.
Volunteer Pledge

I ______________, pledge to donate (10-30-50) __________ hours of my time as a volunteer for Mad Cow Theatre's 2009 Orlando Cabaret Festival.

Volunteering at the Orlando Fringe Festival gives you two things: free tickets to shows and, well, thats it. But when Fringe tickets cost up to $10 per show, and there are 60 plus shows, that's a lost of money you can save just by donating your time. Let George Wallace, the Orlando Fringe Volunteer Coordinator, know which training(s) you plan to attend: volunteer AT orlandofringe DOT org. Or if you need more information, just ask him.

Revised training schedule below:
April 12th. 6-730, Orlando Shakespeare Theater

April 19th, 6-730 Orlando Shakespeare Theater

April 26th. 10-11:30 Parliament House
6-730 Orlando Shakespeare Theater

May 3rd 11-1230 Orlando Shakespeare Theater

MANDATORY BOX OFFICE TRAINING AT SHAKES WITH TICKETING MACHINE:

Puppet Parade: 1st Thursday April 3

Saw this post on Elizabeth Maupin's blog. Puppets!
Well here's your chance to get creative and also get into the Orlando Museum of Art's 1st Thursday event for FREE!

We need approximately 10 fabulous people to be either a human marionette or a "puppeteer" in the Puppet Crawlers Parade during the event this coming Thursday, April 3rd from 6-9pm.

It's going to be headed up by the wonderful genious and mad creator, public- display-of-creativity performance artist, Brian Feldman! Woohooo!

Please send me a message (warpedbanana@yahoo.com) if you're interested and I'll put you in touch with him. We need to know asap, so you can get creative together.

Thanks!
In love with creativity,
Anna McCambridge
