Doug Rhodehamel Latest Show Desicated All Over Orlando

The opening night party for Doug Rhodehamel's show "Desiccation" Friday February 25, 2011 at Twelve21 Gallery (1221-C N. Orange Ave.) was very well-attended. By the time we got there, half the pieces had sold and the room was packed. The boots pictured at left were sported by Rhodehamel, as the show was a collection of pieces modeled to appear as if they were rare sea specimens collected by an 1800s traveller.

The collection was a departure from Doug's normal medium, cardboard, and his tendency to create spaces filled with hundreds of similar-shaped objects. Each piece in this collection was its own entity, each unique. And most likely by the end of the night, each sold.

Twelve21 Gallery | Doug Rhodehamel DESICCATION

Doug Rhodehamel is having his first Twelve21 Gallery (1221-C North Orange Ave. Orlando FL) show DESICCATION Feb. 25 - March 25, 2011. The opening reception is February 25, 7pm - 10pm. His show features a new collection of aquatic life from the deepest depths of the sea. All of the work is made completely from dried leaves, stems, seeds, flowers, buds, bulbs thorns and other various plants matter. The pieces have the look and feel of a turn of the century expedition collection. Each piece is assembled to give the appearance of a dried and mounted aquatic specimen.

He's reconstructed pieces of exotic plant matter from Leu Gardens he collected over the past four years into octopi, fish, mollusks and other ocean dwellers.

"It's been a complete pain in the ass, and I think you're gonna like this one."

Coming off of two very large endeavors - the SPORE Project and LUMINEAX, my art habit has once again exhausted my finances and resources. and, once again... I'm teetering on the brink of homelessness. This time I've decided to have a bit more fun with it.

On May 28, 2010, I met up with two of the three Orlando artists collaborating on an outdoor night time "glowing" experience called Lumineux. We met at Stardust Coffee and Film to briefly chat about this project described as "a living, breathing, art installation and performance with magical movements, mushrooms & illuminations." The artists I met with were mushroom-happy Doug Rhodehamel and Voci Dance's Genevieve Bernard. Nigel John, the third collaborator who works as a DJ, was not present.

This event takes place Saturday, May 29th at 9pm and Sunday, May 30th at 9pm on the lawn of Loch Haven Park during the Orlando Fringe Festival. Tickets are a five dollar donation.

Outsider Art Fair 2010

Winter Park small business Frames Forever & Art Gallery (941 Orange Ave Winter Park, FL 32789) held the 2nd Annual Outsider Art Fair on Saturday March 20, 2010, timed to coincide with the 51st Annual Winter Part Sidewalk Arts Festival down the road.

The first site visitors saw at this frame shop-turned-event-space was performance artist Brian Feldman doing a sequel to sleepwalk, a piece he premiered at the 2009 Outsider Art Fair. In the first version, Feldman let people walk over him as he slept inside a case for 50 hours. This time around, he let people walk below him while he sleepwalked above them, hence the title sleepwalk: i walk over you. The ten foot high scaffolding and man-with-blanket was a draw to the drivers zooming by.
