2009 Patrons Choice Awards

Hundreds of Orlandoans voted in the first-ever TheDailyCity.com Patrons Choice Awards during Orlando's largest annual arts event, the 2009 Orlando Fringe Festival. The awards were handed out May 24, 2009. Twenty-seven performers and producers walked away winners with certificates and original pieces of art created by local Orlando artists, curated by Jessica Earley, producer of the 2009 art show Blunder Bungle. Credit for the photos of the awards ceremony below goes to the awesome team of Denna Eramo and Tisse Mallon.

AMAZING

Thank God I was in the audience today for the 11:30am performance of Jeremy Seghers' "The Amazing Adventures of Normal People in 3D" at the Orlando Fringe Festival. It's a performance art piece done in the genre of theatre. The audience becomes the performer because the real performers (in this performance, they were the Fringe Festival's Producer Beth Marshall and actual performance artist Brian Feldman) die. What does an audience do when the performers die and are not allowed to leave until they pay a ten dollar fee? They become the show. And boy did this audience do just that.

But before I get to that, it should be noted for lovers of The Feldman, during the show Beth Marshall agreed to Brian's proposal for a site-specific show for the 2010 Orlando Fringe. The site? An elevator at the Shakespeare building. Audience size? One. And as Brian said, "No pregnant women allowed."

But back to the show..…

Twitter Orlando Sentinel Fringe coverage

Orlando Sentinel writer Dewayne Bevil will be manning a brand new twitter account for all things Fringe at @OSFringe. Give him a follow and be sure to follow the previously mentioned recommended cadre of local Orlando Fringe twitter news sources.

Orlando Fringe Producer Beth Marshall on radio today

May 13, 2009:Beth Marshall, producer of the Orlando Fringe Festival, will be on the WPRK 91.5 radio show Front Porch Radio, hosted by Ourlando founder Julie Norris at noon on May 13, 2009. She'll be joined by her former assistant of two years Jeremy Seghers.

Fringe Vendors- the highlights

Every year on The Green, amongst the white plastic Wal Mart lawn furniture covered in taped-on, rained-on postcards, people rave about the soul food vendor (wow, chicken and salt- brilliant), complain about the loud music played by the hot dog vendor (bad pop music), and endure the free samples from the popcorn vendor (in classless uncreative tiny paper cups).

This year, all those fabulous treasured vendors that seem to pour out of the woodwork from nowhere (cuz we never see them anywhere but Fringe) will be back, along with a few oddballs I've highlighted below.

Be aware for you Fringe newbies, that there are a ton of food options this year and you are sure to find some semblance of what you enjoy eating. Eat at The Green, support the locals and do not get in your car, drive to the 7-11 a couple blocks away on Mills and eat a $4 sammich like I do every year. And if you want to vend yourself (you can sell food or non-food) send an email to Jae Nale *immediately* at jae1432@aol.com…

Indie Media offers awesome Fringe coverage

If you love Fringe, this year there is most likely someone in indie Orlando media making something for you to watch/listen to/download online to further your passion, probably on an hourly basis. So far we have Dewey Chaffee of The Screw You Revue promising festival-long coverage through video interviews, the Orlando podcast Radio Rickshaw offering audio interviews and even Fringe itself on Facebook distributing it's official photos from Dixie Lee Photography. Below is a sampling of what is online already after just one event, The Fringe Preview Show.

I want to support my fellow vloggers and podcasters by featuring their wares here as they are produced. And I want to support Fringe by sharing all the great coverage they're self-producing. Yay Orlando Fringe and it's indie media supporters! _______________________________________________…

2009 New York Auto Show

Orlando Fringe PR ideas for artists

Orlando Sentinel Theatre Reviewer Elizabeth Maupin came up with an excellent and timely idea for a blog post: Seven Ways to Push Your Fringe Show (and make the press happy). If you have a Fringe show this year, I recommend giving her helpful post a view. Afterwards, come back here for some of my own ideas building off of what she started.

Press Release: If you don't know how to write one, find some online and copy their format and style. One type of place to find good sample to learn from is professional regional theatre websites. Why? They (sometimes) have PR departments with PR pros handling their press releases, or they have outside PR companies handling it. When you get it written, throw it onto Google docs and provide an html link to it in your press emails.

Find a Good Photographer
-How to get photos: Invite photogs to your show and get them to take as many photos as possible in exchange for free tickets or ad space in your program THIS year, so you have good photos for your …

2009 Visual Fringe: applications availabe

The 2009 Visual Fringe applications are now online.

Visual Fringe is the visual art component of the Orlando Fringe Festival. (View The Daily City's 2009 Fringe Guide) During the festival, the walls of the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre and the Patrons' room are filled with art submitted by YOU, whether you're an emerging artist or a well-known, established one. Visual Fringe is uncensored and unjuried and 100% of the money made in art sales is given back to YOU, the artist.

2008 was a record-breaking year for Visual Fringe: Not only did more artists than in previous years participate; more artwork was sold than ever before.

Artists are encouraged to create art that is experimental, unique, beautiful and fringy; something that pushes their limits as artists, such as trying a new medium, subject or motivating factor.________________________________________________
