DJ Khaled Was Raised in Orlando

According to Newsweek, DJ Khaled was raised in Orlando, Florida:  Born in New Orleans in 1975 to Palestinian immigrant parents, raised in Orlando, Florida, and forged into a world-beating DJ in the heat of Miami radio, Khaled Mohamed Khaled is one of America’s top recording artists, with 11 platinum records. Read the full story HERE. Apparently we're late to the party because Orlando Weekly shared this in 2014. They said he attended Dr Phillips High School as well.

SODO Buildings to be Demo'd, Becoming The Shoppes of South Orange

Fences went up today around the one-story orange building at 1731 S. Orange Ave (MAP) and the three yellow buildings behind it. We told you March 29th of last year the .49 acre contiguous property was for sale. Back then it was approved for 30-units per acre or 60-units per acre (bonus with mixed use project).

According to Growthspotter, the buildings demo’d and redeveloped as The Shoppes of South Orange. The retail project is expected to have an Orange Theory Fitness, Smoothie King, European Wax Center, Sage Dental and Lifelink.

Weeki Wachee Mermaids Featured in Vogue and Tribecca Film Festival

Vogue magazine did a photo feature and article about the Weeki Wachee Springs mermaids (Web) on June 16th. They sent a photographer down to photograph the mermaids this Spring. Also, Tribecca Film Festival debuted a short film called The Spring (Web) all about the mermaids as well. In August 2016, seven female filmmakers, all under the age of 25, traveled to Central Florida to film the women of Weeki Wachee Springs.

Vintage Hermes, Gucci, Dior and Louis Vuitton Handbags Now Being Sold at Dillard's Florida Mall

Vintage Hermes, Gucci, Dior and Louis Vuitton Handbags are for sale at the Florida Mall Dillard's. This department store isn't known for ever carrying high end brands of handbags. 
The presence of these luxury bags in this mid price retailer is made possible thanks to a website called What Goes Around Goes Around.
Currently, Dillard's has a Birkin, a Kelly, every shape of Louis (except Speedy) and more. According to the salesperson we spoke with, they've sold one Birkin so far. The Birkin they have on display in a glass case is going for $14,000.

Caribbean Carnaval Buffet and Show at Sapphire Falls

Full disclosure: our meals were comped. 

Caribbean Carnaval is a new buffet and floor show at the Loews Sapphire Falls Resort at Universal Orlando. It takes place underneath an un-walled roofed pavilion in a cove accessible to guests down a long hallway past convention rooms, down a staircase and through a door to the cove.

The food is a buffet island dishes with fish, beef and chicken. Several side dishes were various exotic vegetables mixed in sauces. The highlight was the giant apple-mouthed whole-bodied hog sleeping on a table, its innards removed and replaced with piles of cooked pork.

The show is non-stop high energy island music. It's set up like you're taking a trip. The host bounces from island to island, with new songs inspired by each island. It's a mix of pop songs with Latin themes all the way to Rihanna. The backup band is solid and the singers are fun. The stage is roaming with dancers. First Look at Cottage Home Designs for Margaritaville

Today Margaritaville Resort Orlando (WEB) unveiled the designs of their vacation cottages. When the resort opens in 2018, it will feature 1,000 units made up of resort vacation homes, cottages, villas, and timeshare units. Prices start at $250,000. The designs were inspired by Key West, Bahamas, Jamaica, coastal Carolina, the Florida Keys, and towns along the Gulf Coast. The homes have "dozens of atmospheric architectural details intended to transport visitors, both mentally and physically, to the Margaritaville state of mind.”

The vacation homes and overall design of Margaritaville Resort Orlando is led by the McBride Company.

Local Teacher Chosen for Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institute

Each year, the Library of Congress provides the opportunity for a group of K-12 educators to attend one of its five teacher institutes in Washington, D.C. Local teacher Lynn Messina of Good Shepherd Catholic School in Orlando was selected from a pool of more than 300 applicants to participate in the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Summer Teacher Institute for the week of June 26-30, 2017.

During the five-day program, participants work with Library education specialists and subject-matter experts to learn effective practices for using primary sources in the classroom, while exploring some of the millions of digitized historical artifacts and documents available on the Library’s website.

Educators attending the teacher institutes participate in and develop primary-source-based teaching strategies that they can take back to their school districts, apply in the classroom and share with colleagues. Teaching with primary sources is a powerful way to help student…

Downtown Strip of Stores to Get $20,000 Towards Facade Renovation

The owner of the strip of downtown shops at 223-231 Magnolia Avenue (MAP) will receive $20,000 from the City as part of its Downtown Façade and Building Stabilization Program. Funding will be used for a storefront system with frontage on Magnolia Avenue. The committee made this recommendation the City Council will vote on on June 19th. 

The applicant's capital investment for the proposed improvements is estimated at $86,000, based upon three contractor estimates provided for the above referenced improvements, thus they were eligible for funding assistance of up to $20,000.00. 

The Downtown Façade and Building Stabilization Program offers a three-year, interest-free deferred loan for façade and/or building stabilization improvements to existing properties within the Downtown Community Redevelopment Area ("Downtown CRA"). The Program, which was approved by the CRA on July 30, 2012, provides assistance with costs related to exterior physical improvements throughout the entire…

Canvs Opening Second Downtown Location

CanvsORL, Inc., will open a new 15-desk location at the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy at 500 Bentley Street (MAP) with $50,000 from City of Orlando. The space will be called Canvs-Parramore. City will vote on it June 19th. 
Funding from the City of Orlando will cover the following:

Take Out Restaurant Will Stay 14 Years in City-Owned Retail Space

Since 2006, Lilia’s Grilled Delights has operated the 325 sq ft take-out café business leased from the City of Orlando located within the Library Parking Garage at 132 E. Central Blvd (MAP). The Lease expires on July 31, 2017 and both the City and Lilia's wish to enter a new agreement. City Council will vote on it June 19th.

Rent for the initial term will rise from $370.50 be $450.35 per month ($5,404.20 annually) and will increase 5% per year thereafter.

The new lease will be for 3 years with two 1-year extensions at the City's discretion.

The City's purpose in leasing this space is to promote the Central Business District by encouraging retail businesses and services with the intent of encouraging pedestrian traffic.

$77,000 Awarded in Mayor's Matching Grant Program

City of Orlando is awarding 14 grants totaling $77,000 in the second cycle of the Mayor's Matching Grant Program for fiscal year 2016-2017. This represents 9 awards to schools and 501(c)3 non-profit organizations (ranging from $3,500 to $10,000) and 5 awards of up to $5,000 to neighborhood organizations. All activities and projects will take place within the City of Orlando. The grant term will commence on July 1, 2017 and will be completed on or before June 30, 2018.
