Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to Work-Along with Fifth Third Bank and Homeless Children as Part of the Summer of Dreams Program

When school is out for the summer, fewer critical resources are available for Central Florida’s growing population of homeless children. To fill this need, the City of Orlando has partnered with Fifth Third Bank for The Summer of Dreams, a free, 10-week program that provides homeless students with meals, academic enrichment, mentoring and school supplies, as well as financial counseling for parents and students.

As part of the program, Mayor Dyer will work-along with Fifth Third Bank employees and participating homeless youth to help pack take home meals for the children at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida Friday, June 26, 2015, 11:30am at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida (411 Mercy Drive, Orlando, FL 32805). The food packs are sent home each weekend with the participating youth to ensure they have food outside the program.

The Summer of Dreams program furthers the City of Orlando’s efforts to help homeless families and students. Through the City’s extensive y…

Lamp & Shade Fair: 50 years of Lamps and Shades

Lamp & Shade Fair (Web) at 1336 N. Mills Ave) is a 50 year old family-owned lighting center. A WHAT??!! This tiny box of a store sells exactly what you'd think: lamp shades, lamps and lighting accessories. The whole box is slapped full of the stuff. They also do portable lighting, chandeliers, sconces and fixtures. Take a look inside because it's ALL LAMPS.

The front two windows have a display with painted light bulbs and flags.

Field Guide to the Gays final performance, a benefit!

Did you get to see Logan Donahoo's Field Guide to the Gays 2 at this years Orlando Fringe Festival?? No? Yes, but you want to see it again? Well here's your chance!

Check out his snazzy video for tonight!

Logan will be doing one final performance tonight of Feild Guide at the Footlight's Theater at the Parliament House AND he's donating ticket sales to another great local artist, Hannah Miller. Hannah suffers from Myasthenia Gravis Syndrome. MG is a rare auto immune neuro muscular disorder that is so rare that only one in a thousand people have it. I believe I was once told that if a whole football stadium were filled, only ten or twenty of those people would have MG.

WHERE: Foolight Theater at the Parliament House
(410 North Orange Blossom Trail, Orlando, Florida 32805)

Ice Cream Flight Spotted in Debary #BringToOrlando

Photo Credit: Twisted Tap Bar & Grill
A reader alerted us to the first Central Florida business (that we know of) serving at ice cream flight. A Debary restaurant called Twisted Tap Bar & Grill (Facebook) at 220 N Charles Richard Beall Blvd posted a photo of an ice cream flight on their Facebook page Saturday June 27th.

The product looks like beer glasses on a beer flight paddle filled with ice cream. The ice cream flight does not appear on their menu. It's not known where the ice cream comes from, who makes it, what the flavors are or what the cost is.

If you spot an ice cream flight or if you see other fun ideas that you'd like to see businesses #bringtoorlando, let us know in the comments.

Theatrical Culinary Project Fuses Food and Theatre #BringToOrlando

Taking pop up dinners to the next level, The Theatrical Culinary Project is an immersive play and dining experience that we want someone to #BringToOrlando.

During a four-course meal, the audience is submerged in a play set in a restaurant taking place around them.

How fun! Bring to Orlando!

This concept is currently in development with an upcoming two-week workshop July 28th-August 7th in New York City.

The Theatrical Culinary Project was awarded a five-day residency at SPACE, where the creators will focus exclusively on the development of the scripts. Following Ryder Farm they will return to New York City to integrate food and menu into the structure of the plays, work with an ensemble cast, continue script development, rehearse with their entire team, prep for a four course meal and reading, and close with an intimate presentation for a handful of audience members, to assess the impact the immersive experience has on the piece.

Lake Nona Starbucks Coming In Fall

Lake Nona is getting its own Starbucks this Fall. This is HUGE news for this area because, for now at least, the area is light on food and drink options. According to Orlando Business Journal, a 2,105 square foot Starbucks is opening in the Fall inside a shopping center near the Lake Nona campus of Valencia College called Vickery Place.

They do have a weekly farmers market:
Lake Nona Back to Nature Farmers Market
Saturdays 8am-1pm
Crescent Park, 8374 Upper Perse Circle, Orlando, FL 3282
Fresh produce, artisan gifts, handmade crafts and more supporting your Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge. ....and a monthly 7-food-truck event: The Daily City Food Truck Bazaar
2nd Thursdays 5-8pm
Crescent Park, 8374 Upper Perse Circle, Orlando, FL 3282
Seven bazaar-approved food trucks. No chairs provided. All trucks take credit cards. Rain or shine. All trucks subject to change without notice.  ...but this will be the area's first Starbucks.
