Celebration High School: Storm the Batey 5k

I first me Katie and learned of The Batey Rehab Project while working on an art event. The photos she sent of the jewelry that is made and sold to fund the non-profit were stunning to say the least. I then found out more about the project and that it benefits areas in theDominican Republic an area that is near to my heart, I was even more inspired by her project.
I spent 2 weeks in the Dominican Republic while in high school on a service project. It is a beautiful land with even more beautiful people. The Batey Rehab Project's mission is to Partner with locals to provide community development within Haitian Migrant Labor Camps (Bateyes) alongside villagers, enabling the rehabilitation and re-build of their communities.
Celebration High School has chosen The Batey Project to receive proceeds from their up coming 5K.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer 's 2014 State of Downtown Address

You can watch Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer 's 2014 State of Downtown Addressonline here at 3:30pm on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. If you want to attend and watch it live, it'll take place at the Church Street Exchange Building, 101 South Garland Avenue, Orlando, FL 32801. Advance registration is required for this sell-out event. Cost is $40 for DOP members and $50 for nonmembers. Due to limited space, general admission tickets will be standing room only for this event.

This year, Mayor Dyer will share the latest on the City’s comprehensive visioning process for the continued revitalization of Downtown Orlando, led by the citizen taskforce, Project DTO— Advancing Downtown. As part of this, Mayor Dyer will make several announcements that will shape the next decade of Downtown.
Similar to each State of Downtown address, Mayor Dyer will also provide the community with an update on facts, figures and new developments in Downtown Orlando.

DAMN! For 42 Years A 120-Person Choir and Orchestra Have Been Giving Performances of Handel's Messiah FOR FREE to Central Florida!

This is the 42nd DAMN year in a row that the Messiah Choral Society has been presenting Handel's Messiah free to the Central Florida public. Can you believe that? 42 years of 120 choir members, soloists and orchestra members... for FREE!?

(They do ask that you bring donations of nonperishable food items to the performance in support of the Second Harvest Food Bank.)

The nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization raises all the funds necessary to produce and present this performance as a gift to the Central Florida community every year.

Conducted by Dr. John Sinclair, Chair and Professor of Music at Rollins College, the concert features many familiar masterworks such as the “Hallelujah Chorus,” performed by our 120+ member choir, professional soloists and orchestra.

Homeless Students Helped in Fern Creek Fundraiser November 6th

The Fern Creek Bulldog Benefit is an annual event featuring food from Mills50 restaurants, entertainment and a silent auction taking place Thursday November 6th. Tickets are $25 and available online. All proceeds to go the The Fern Creek Foundation which provides weekend snack packs, socks, underwear, winter coats, a food pantry, clothing closet, and mentoring programs for the students at Fern Creek Elementary. 

Why this school in particular? 
More than half of the students are bused in from the Coalition for the Homeless in Downtown Orlando and Parramore, one of Orlando’s poorest neighborhoods. More than 94 percent of Fern Creek students qualify for the nationally funded School Lunch Program, which provides meal assistance to children who live near or below the poverty level. For their lowest-income students, the school day is where guaranteed meals start and end.Many go home and spend the night or weekend hungry. Tickets are $25 and available online

Selena Gomez Wax Statue Visits Lake Eola and I-Drive

Madame Tussauds has a planned 2015 grand opening on I-Drive. To bring some attention to the impending wax museum, they creeped the hell out of the staff at The Daily City this week by posing their human-like version of Selena Gomez in two Orlando locations: in front of the unfinished ferris wheel on I-Drive and beside the iconic (to some not us) Lake Eola Park.

Old Town in Kissimmee is hosting an old fashion Halloween celebration and it's free! Offering 6 different themed haunted areas with many photo opportunities, Zombies roaming the streets, costume contests and a Thriller show several times through out the night along with their shops and restaurants.
If you are brave enough, stop by and visit the Ashdown family at Legend's A Haunting at Old Town. Legend's is open all year round but you have just a few more chances to catch the Halloween celebration!
