By: Denna Beena Contributing Writer &
Animal Lover

The first ever Run for Rescues happened this past weekend at The Mall at Millenia. It was sheer puppy heaven as the ASPCA (now named Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando) hosted not only a fashionable 5k, but also a 1k puppy run. Costumes were encouraged for both so you know I tutu-ed up!

The event also provided a training program to get ready for the event and health screening before and after the races. Sanlando Springs Animal Hospital and Rocky's Retreat provided canine health screenings and demonstrations. Florida Hospital Healthy 100 provided human health screenings and  Florida Hospital Women's Mobile Coach was there as well offering screening mammograms.

After the races, Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando's shelter hosted a meet the cats and dogs available for adoption. They also offer $10 micro-chipping for your dog (regularly $30) and $30 off adoptions all weekend long.

Central Florida Number One in the Nation For Preventable Pedestrian Deaths

2014 report finds pedestrians disproportionately killed or injured due to poor street design and planning

Full report | Florida report | Interactive Fatalities Map

According to a new report released by the National Complete Streets Coalition, Central Florida ranks as the most dangerous metropolitan region for walkers over the ten year period of 2003 – 2012 with the state of Florida taking first place in the nation. Statewide 5,189 people were killed for doing something as simple and necessary as crossing the street, with 583 of those deaths taking place in Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties.

The report, “Dangerous by Design 2014,” ranks how safe people are while walking in the major metropolitan areas by looking at the number of residents who walk to work and the pedestrians killed over a select time period. This is referred to as the Pedestrian Danger Index (PDI). The report finds high PDI is a function of low walking rates and roads that are designed to move cars quickly. Acco…

I kind of love this show. I kind of wish it were done in the purple venue but when it didn't have the cover thingies on the ceiling and it did have those fun starry lights. I kind of wish those who were in the audience would have jumped up and danced!! Of course that would be dancing while watching the very cool and fun films that they had going behind the music.
