Barnes & Noble: Gone By New Year’s?

By: Michael Levin

If anyone gives you a Barnes & Noble gift card, be sure to cash it in by the end of the year.

This may be the last year that Barnes & Noble bookstores remain open.

It’s bad news for people who love books. It’s worse news for the next generation of readers, who may never experience buying a book in a bookstore.

B&N has been closing about 20 stores per year since 2012 and has said it will continue to do so for the next several years. But its financial position is bleak.

This follows a decades-long period of expansion, moving into neighborhoods where privately-owned bookstores thrived, destroying those stores with cut-price best-sellers, and all but owning the book business.

Borders collapsed because of poor choices -- weak locations, an overemphasis on music, and, worst of all, selling off its online bookstore to Amazon for $20 million in the 1990s. Chump change, by today’s standards.

So why is B&N on the ropes if it has virtually no competition today from c…

They Might Be Giants Selects Orlando Artist's Video to Represent Their Latest Track "Am I Awake"

In late February, They Might Be Giants put out a call for music videos based on their track “Am I Awake” to support the release of their new compilation album, Idlewild. The band demanded “...beautiful, bold, stylish, contemporary, psychedelic, mind-bending” entries. Jack Fields, a local artist known for his work with puppets, digital animation, and video, delivered. Posted on the They Might Be Giants video channel as an official representation for the track, his award also includes $1,000.00 and a pre-release copy of the compilation album. The video will also be released on the band’s Vimeo Channel later this week.

Enlisting his creative partners Hannah Miller, John Regan III, and April Tennyson, Jack and his team embarked on a whirlwind week of building and shooting. Most of the puppet characters were chosen from Jack’s personally-created menagerie of existing creatures, but a typewriter monster had to be fabricated nearly overnight from garbage lying around their studio by Hannah to…

Orlando Fringe Preview Party at Parliament House

Orlando Fringe Festival is on its way in May (god save us) and Michael Wanzie is hosting his own sort-of Fringe preview party Tuesday April 29th 6-9pm at Parliament House. Folks with shows will be there, Fringe-themed trivia games will be played, drinks will be drunk and some arguments might ensue (a typical happening at a Wanzie trivia night).

To add to the insanity, there will be free hot dogs and chips to wash your vodka down with. But I beg you: when you order your drink, make sure you tell them DO NOT give you a Parliament House pour. They pour the STIFFEST drinks that will land you on your butt in minutes.
Be sure to vote in our 6th Annual Audience Choice Awards for your favorite Fringe shows this year!

Orlando Fringe Must-See Show: Desperately Seeking the Exit

By Mark Baratelli, Publisher
So this guy writes a musical version of "Desperately Seeking Susan," the 80s film staring Madonna, using music done by the band Blondie. Apparently, it bombed. Hard.
Vote for your favorite Fringe show in our 6th Annual Audience Choice Awards

Now the writer put together a one man show in which he tells the audience what the hell went on during that hot mess.

The writers name is Peter Michael Marino and he's done this show at Edinburgh Fringe and in two fringes in Australia: Brighton and Adelaide. Now he's (logically) coming to Orlando to make his US debut with the show.
Summary: In 2007, American playwright Peter Michael Marino wrote a musical based on the film Desperately Seeking Susan featuring the music of Blondie. It opened on London’s West End…and closed a month later. DESPERATELY SEEKING THE EXIT offers a comical, behind-the-scenes peek at how this $6 million musical was made and unmade: hatching the idea, deals wit…

Name of Show: Something’s Weird in Weeki Wachee
Our Opinion: Must-See
Why: the story, the cast, the local theme park link
About: The show features two faded Weeki Wachee Mermaid performers living in seclusion. (!!!)  Stop right there. I am sold.
Their down-on-his-luck-theme-park-performer nephew moves in and discovers a bizarre secret.
What's more bizarre than to former mermaids? Can't wait to find out.
The show stars two hilarious local theatre performers: Elizabeth T. Murff and Peg O'Keef. Trust me, they're hilarious.

Fashion for Fox Fundraiser at Zou Zou Boutique to Benefit Michael J. Fox Foundation

Tonya Walker is an Orlando resident, Professor at a local college and a local blogger. About 7 years ago, she was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's Disease. She recently underwent Deep Brain Stimulation ("DBS") surgery to counteract the symptoms of the disease. The miraculous benefits of the DBS surgery have encouraged her to "go public" about her condition and take an active role in raising funds for the research to find a cure.

Her husband and she came up with the idea of the Fashion for Fox Fundraiser as their first event of this year to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation. They are hosting the event at Zou Zou's Dellagio location, which is at 7988 Via Dellagio Way, Orlando, FL 32819. The event is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014.

The owner of Zou Zou (Wendy Ricchi) has graciously agreed to donate 20% of the gross profits to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The attendees will make a donation to attend the event, and we will…

6th Annual Audience Choice Awards- 2014

The Daily City LOVES Orlando Fringe
The Daily City's owner Mark Baratelli friggin' loves Fringe: his solo show "Improv Cabaret" was a Fringe sell-out in 2006 and 2007. In it, he improvised a 30-40 minute solo cabaret act, complete with songs. In 2008, he came back with a solo half improv half sketch show called "How Do You Feel?," a take on self help gurus. In 2009, he saw a need at Orlando Fringe for a way for shows that didn't sell the most tickets to gain some recognition. So, through his blog, he created Audience Choice Awards.
How This Works
Fans nominate their faves in round one, vote for their faves in round two, then watch the winners get announced live on the outdoor stage the final Sunday of Fringe.
Benefits to Performers
Winning one of our Audience Choice Awards gives performers one more "Best of" award to add to their marketing packet.
