Gimme Shelter Review | Semi-Evangelical Teen Pregnancy Melodrama Manages Very Little Genuine Emotion

Orlando Lens
By Nicholas Ware Twitter | E-mail

It's not easy to so thoroughly dislike a movie like Gimme Shelter. It should be a lovely, uplifting experience. It's about a girl overcoming the odds to make her life better. There's repaired relationships, honest charity, and recognizable actors with honest talent. Given the formula, Gimme Shelter should be no less than mediocre. However, no amount of positives can save a film from the technical and writing mistakes that plague Gimme Shelter.

There's a term for melodramatic teen-centered cautionary tales: "after-school special." The term comes from a genre of television that has mostly dissipated. These made-for-TV movies were meant to teach young viewers to be wary of the dangers that faced them: drugs, sex, depression, and table-top devil-worshiping role-playing games. The genre has a history of proselytizing, or at the very least conservative thinking. That's not inherently a knock on it, but these types of s…

Against Me! Coming To The Beacham This Weekend

Against Me! play The Beacham this Saturday (January 25th) with The Sidekicks and The Shondes. Click here for tickets and info

Against Me! have a new album out today, called 'Transgender Dysphoria Blues,' and it's a pretty significant one. There have been changes in personnel since the band's last record. They're no longer on a major, having started their own label, Total Treble. Oh, and it's the first since singer Laura Jane Grace came out as transgender. That monumental life event is the focus of a couple of songs, including the rabble-rousing title track. Elsewhere, the band is just as anthemic, polemic and fierce as ever. 'Black Me Out' is a rage-filled tirade against unnamed music industry types. 'Unconditional Love' is a nice old-fashioned rock and roll song. For a band that once sang "Let's try and keep as much emotion out of this as possible", they're not very good at following that advice, thank goodness.

Sea World Releases Statement: Why Blackfish is Propaganda, Not a Documentary

Sea Word released a statement about the controversial documentary film Blackfish on January 20th, a month after their full page ad making similar, less specific claims was released. Below is the statement, in its entirety.
Why “Blackfish” is Propaganda, not a Documentary

We object to Blackfish because its two central premises are wrong: (1) that life at SeaWorld is harmful for killer whales and for trainers working with these animals, and (2) that SeaWorld has attempted to cover up the facts surrounding the tragic death of trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010, as well the history of Tilikum, the killer whale involved in that accident. Nothing could be further from the truth.

To make these ultimately false and misleading points, the film conveys falsehoods, manipulates viewers emotionally, and relies on questionable filmmaking techniques to create “facts” that support its point of view.

Here are some significant examples with links to supporting documents:

1. Blackfish employs false and emoti…
