Halloween Review: The Shallow Grave

By: Denna Beena Contributing Writer

When I first heard that there was going to be a new haunt opening in Winter Haven I thought, "Oh that's nice". When I heard that my super talented friend JD Ellis, owner of Post Mortum FX was going to be involved I thought, "That's going to be bad ass" and after driving close to an hour to get there, The Shallow Grave BLEW every expectation right out the being chased by a maniac door!!

This place has got to be on every Halloween, horror loving persons schedule. In my opinion (and I am not alone) it is the best haunted house in Central Florida and that IS taking into account the big players HHN and HOS and the other really great solid local haunts.

You can clearly see that the design, build and follow through was done by people who have looked at what works and what doesn't and then pushed even further to bring scares that are very well played. The detail is amazing. The effects are like what you should see at a big theme …

Hardships and Joys of the "Jazz Existence" the Focus of Original Play by Joseph Reed Hayes

The 13in13 Project, a year filled with 13 artistic events – theater, jazz, literary readings, workshops and movie screenings – culminates Dec. 6-9 as playwright and music producer Joseph Reed Hayes presents his jazz play, "Solos", in the Goldman Theater at the Lowndes Shakespeare Center.

The play, about love, deception and the hardships and joys of the jazz existence, is directed by theater veteran Paul Castaneda and stars Michael Sapp and Desiree Perez It features the music of Brian Groder, and the final evening will feature a live performance by the dynamic jazz ensemble La Lucha.

Sapp, called "a force of nature" by the Orlando Sentinel, plays trumpeter Ben "Blue" Miller through several decades of American jazz. Perez, a charismatic musical theater performer, plays Eleanor Grace, a composer whose work propels her partner to fame. Groder, named "Best of the Year" by Downbeat Magazine, has written music specifically for this production. The show…

30 Guerrilla Gardners, Graphic Novelists, Composers, Fashion Designers, Tactical Urbanists and Psychogeographers Will Ride a Different LYNX Bus Route in November and Create Art Based on the Experience

David Moran, who has been an integral part of The Corridor Project, is one of many participants in a 30 day event called Transit Interpretation Project

Moran will get on a LYNX bus the night before Halloween Night and ride from the UCF area to the Parliament House. He plans on walking back home after the bar closes. He says Google Maps says the walk home is 4 hours and 17 minutes long. The next day he will pass the 30 day Lynx pass to Hannah Plate who will take the 313 towards Winter Park.
Everyday in November artists, writers, urban planners, guerrilla gardners, graphic novelists, composers, fashion designers, tactical urbanists, psychogeographers and others will take the Lynx pass riding at least one route that a previous person has not taken.
The participants have 30 days after they ride to give us something that we can post on the blog. It can be glimpse of a work in progress or a complete work.

Walt Disney Imagineering announced that the Jungle Cruise in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland is getting a temporary holiday makeover for the first time ever starting in November.

The new name? Jingle Cruise:
"In this new seasonal storyline of the attraction, the Skippers have grown homesick for the holidays, so they’ve added holiday cheer to the Jungle Cruise queue and boathouse with decorations that have been mailed to them from home (plus a few they’ve created themselves). The Skippers have also added a slew of new jokes to their tours that are the perfect way to get guests in the holiday spirit. Additionally, Jungle Cruise boats have been renamed with the holidays in mind, and if guests listen carefully, they may hear a holiday-themed radio broadcast playing in the background."Jingle Cruise will debut on November 12 at Disneyland park. No date has been announced yet for Magic Kingdom.

East End Market Closed for the Week After Fantastic Opening Weekend, Will ReOpen Saturday

After a fantastic opening weekend (see photos here) save the unexpected fire inspection at 1:30pm which forced the doors to close on opening day, East End Market is taking a breather this week and reopening Saturday November 2 at 10am, according to their instagram feed. Scott Joseph has more details

It was said in the opening remarks Friday morning at 9am by the man with the plan John Rife, that there is no blueprint for what this organization is doing. They're taking guides and cues from other cities, but there's no "Open an Inside Year-Round Market for Dummies" book out there at Barnes & Noble. So expect hiccups and learning curves. But to us, that's part of the fun. We get to watch as this fantastic business is born and grows into maturity. Sure to be a staple of the community, we are excited to watch the progress.

Capen House Might Have to be Floated on a Barge Back Across the Lake in New Lawsuit

This is a graphic we made for our May 2013 story on the Capen house

Remember we told you that a house in Winter Park is going to be cut in half, placed on a barge and floated across a lake? Well, a new lawsuit has been filed stating that if that happens, the homeowners have to put it back together, put it back on the barge and float it back across the river.

According to the Winter Park Voice, Plaintiff attorney Richard Wilson says there is no provision or ordinance to remove a historic designation, so the removal of the house's historic designation can't happen... even though it did already. If he wins, the house may have to be brought back to its original location and put back together again:

"Concerned Citizens for Historic Preservation, Inc., requests that this Court issue a mandatory injunction, compelling Defendant 520 N. Interlachen, L.L.C. to return the property to its condition before the historic landmark designation was wrongfully rescinded."

East End Market in Audubon Park is Local and Lovely!

By Mark Baratelli
East End Fan

East End Market (3201 Corrine Dr, Orlando) opened this morning and wow. Just wow. It's so freaking lovely I want to kiss every light fixture, stained concrete step and relaimed wood panel. The space looks fantastic. And the food vendors are great too. But I think so often we overlook the importance of designed spaces, or lack thereof, in Orlando. This is one. Look at it. More, please.

Operation Gratitude Orlando Halloween Candy Collection in in Full Swing Thanks to Trinity Preparatory School Senior

Andrew Weinstock, a senior at Trinity Preparatory School in Winter Park, is on his fifth year collecting Halloween candy for deployed soldiers as part of the 2013 Operation Gratitude Orlando Halloween Candy Collection.  Last year he collected 10,460 lbs and this year's goal for himself is 12,000 lbs. (6 tons). The candy collection runs from October 15th - November 18th.

Operation Gratitude sends individual care packages to soldiers deployed in various combat zones throughout the world. The care packages include items such as hygiene products, magazines and letters of appreciation from school children as well as handmade cards and pictures. The letters build morale. These boxes also include candy collected during Halloween. The candy is used as a tool to foster community relations with local village children, and is also given to them as “currency” in exchange for information that frequently saves the lives of U.S. soldiers. This candy is not only a sweet treat from home, but i…

Plans Leaked for Universal Orlando's Garden Bridge over Hollywood Way

Early in 2014, the Universal Orlando Resort will debut its fourth hotel, the value-priced Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Located on the corner of Turkey Lake Road and Hollywood Way, the new hotel will feature a retro 1960's theme, lazy river, and 10-lane bowling alley. But unlike Universal's first three hotels, it will not offer water taxi service to the theme parks and CityWalk. Instead, a pedestrian bridge will be built to help guests travel across Hollywood way, and yesterday the first concept art and plans leaked for the innovative "green bridge" that Universal will be building.
Green Roof Technology released on their website (and then quietly removed) concept art and a press release announcing their "Garden Bridge" project for Universal Orland. Described as "the first of its kind in Florida," the 145' long bridge features "selected ground covers, shrubs" and a gently-sloping wheelchair-accessible approach that will "escort pedes…

CANstruction Orlando Brings the Canned Corn and Beans

CANstruction Orlando is an annual contest in which local architectural firms build objects out of canned food, battling it out to see who goes to Nationals. All the attention (and food) goes to Second Harvest Food Bank.

The big question nobody cares about except me because I was a judge this year is 'How is it judged?'. I'll tell you. You're welcome.

There were seven judges total, including the Publisher of the Orlando Weekly, Graham Jarrett in his tidy shirt and flat front pants, who gathered on a rainy Monday night inside the Fashion Square Mall at 6:30pm. I didn't bring an umbrella, so I arrived wet and sloppy, like my kisses and Thursday nights.

So this was Monday night, and here I am inside a mall after a full day of work taking photos of muffins and instagramming photos of muffins and talking about muffins to store owners. After all that work, I had the energy to give back to the community. You're welcome, The City Beautiful.

When I arrived, I made eye con…
