Ivanhoe Village Main Street Update: Take the Holiday Sign Restoration Survey

At one time in Orlando’'s history, a neon sign was lit on top of the OUC power station at 1111 N. Orange Ave. during the holiday season. The sign spelled out “Merry Christmas” then would change to read “Happy New Year.” Residents and visitors of Orlando could see it from I-4 and when it was lit, everyone knew the holiday season had begun.

It turns out that the letters are still on top of the building, which is now home to the Orlando Ballet and Central Florida Community Arts. Interested parties from Orlando Utilities Commission, City of Orlando, Ivanhoe Village Main Street, and Ivanhoe Foundation are exploring the possibility of restoring the sign. Everyone involved is excited about the project, but it will be time consuming and substantial funds will need to be raised.

Ivanhoe Village Main Street is taking a poll to gauge public interest in the project. The survey is brief, so take a moment to make your voice heard.CLICK HERE TO TAKE THE SURVEY

Trashed a Small Business Online? Now They Can Trash You!

The website Nasty Client allows small business owners to post and read reviews of customers, allowing the business owner to see if they want to accept a customer... or not. It's like a Yelp and Angie's List that rates customers. You know, the people who leave reviews of small businesses on those same sites.

The owner "started developing in 2009 because (he) was sick and tired of working for bad customers. (He) was also annoyed at how small business owners are portrayed in the Media as “crooks”. Only stories about little old ladies being taken advantage of are spammed through the media. ...the customer is NOT always right."
The vision of Nasty Client is "to change the way consumers all over the world treat small businesses. No longer will it be acceptable for a client to not pay, or try to negotiate the final balance of the job... We may be considered Small Businesses, but together our voices are ENORMOUS!"
Might make you think twice bef…

Steak N Shake: From Toilet Bowl to High Class Urn

By Mark Baratelli Hater
I like the food at Steak N Shake, but the interior design feels eating inside a giant toilet bowl. Everything is white and has a hard surface. I think they flush it nightly to clean it.
Imagine my surprise when our crack team of researching, bloodhound-like snoops sent me a link to the website for Steak and Shake Signature. Look at these glorious photos below. The mock-up interiors shows don't even remotely resemble the toilet bowls. There is a warm, friendly and modern feel to them. Like the inside of a classy hotel urn. There are currently five locations in the US, according to the website. I love it and hope they bring it to Orlando.

Rape at Disney? Shocking New Confession Tells of One Female's Nightmare College Program Experience

By Ken Storey
Many people think of Disney as one of the 'happiest places on earth,' but is Walt Disney World one of the best for rapists as well? A new article posted on xoJane, a third-wave feminist online magazine, tells of how one rapist may have gotten away with it at Disney and questions the  handling of college students that are in Disney's college intern program, one of the largest in the world.

The article is a confession from Dana Wierzbicki, a college graduate from Chicago, who came to Florida for a dream internship.  Just three weeks into her stay here in Orlando, she claims she was raped by a college program international student from France after a night of partying together.

The rape though, sadly, isn't the worst part of the story.  The truly shocking part comes later when she recounts what happened when she reported the incident. Meeting with a one of the counselors in Disney’s Employee Assistance Program, Wierzbicki is shocked by what she is told.

There's four new releases coming Orlando's way this weekend (well, three "new" and one return of a Florida Film Festival film), and the Daily City has you covered with a quick guide to your box office offerings.

The Heat
R - Comedy - Starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy - Directed by Paul Feig - Playing at most major multiplexes
Rotten Tomatoes % as of writing: 69%
Paul Feig, last seen helming lady-centric ultra-funny Bridesmaids, returns with another lady-centric, possibly-ultra-funny buddy cop comedy with by-the-book Bullock's FBI agent teaming with stark-raving-mad McCarthy's Boston cop. I'm sure there's some evil drug lord or corporate criminal mastermind they're chasing, but the plot's not the thing in a movie like this, the laughs are. So far, summer has only delivered one good comedy (This Is The End), so hopefully this exercise in gussying up an old-hat genre will hit all the right notes.…

Barnie's Coffee CEO Gives Us More Details Of Their Latest Round of Closures and Where The Company Is Headed

By Ken Storey

We first told you of Barnie's Coffee closing almost half of their remaining seven corporate location earlier this week, including the closure of the Baldwin Park store at the end of June 2013.  At its peak the chain had 110 stores; now it has only seven locations with three closing within the next few months.

We reached out to Barnie's CoffeeKitchen, as the company is now known as, for more details on this latest round of closures and how the company will move forward after more than a decade of closures and restructuring.  Barnie's CoffeeKitchen CEO Johnathan Smiga gives us some more details of what is to come.

TDC- Is the Baldwin Park location being replaced with a CoffeeKitchen, or will there be zero presence in Baldwin Park by your company?
JS- Unfortunately, we will no longer have a presence at this time in Baldwin Park. We had hoped to move our current location to one on New Broad Street but could not come to terms with the developer that met our needs.…
