Disney's Award Winning Animated Short, Paperman, Released Online

Paperman, the groundbreaking animated short from Walt Disney Animation Studios, was the first to use computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques in such a seamless fashion.  The minimalist black and white used in the short draws your attention to the story.  The story itself is the classic boy meet girl story, while enjoyable the reason to watch this film is the beauty in the animation itself.  Almost any frame of this film could be a piece of art in and of itself.

The short film had been the talk of film industry for sometime but there was no way to watch the film without going to the theaters.  Luckily the video was uploaded to YouTube on January 29th and within 24hours had gained more than 400,000 views.  If you haven't seen it yet take a moment from the craziness of life and just have a Disney moment.

Owner of New Orlando Speakeasy, Hanson's Shoe Repair, Shares History of the Bar and What He Thinks Downtown Needs

While downtown has plenty of places for a drink, a new bar in a very old space is quickly becoming the talk of the town. Hanson's Shoe Repair is found on the third floor of NV Art Bar on Pine Street. NV Art Bar is already known as a classy place to go when you want something more than cheap PBR tall boys and dance floors with way too many Xs in sight. This new bar is taking the classiness to a level that Orlando has never seen -er- should I say it hasn't since 1933! This is a speakeasy. Yes, like a full fledged secret-password-hidden-space type of speakeasy.

The setting builds the anticipation for the mixologists that shine through with the wide selection of prohibition era inspired drinks, with a bourbon focus of course. Add live music, a rough turn of the century looking high walled outdoor area, and burlesque dancers and you can see why this is quickly becoming Orlando's must-see bar.

Recently we were able to get a quick interview with Curt, one of the owners of the new…

Walt Disney World's Big River to Host Tapping Party

Walt Disney World is a huge place with dozens of great restaurants and activities for not only kids but many for just those over 21.  One such little known adult hangout is Walt Disney World's very own micro-brewery, Big River Grille and Brewing Works.  Located at Disney's Boardwalk resort the microbrewery offers a number of unique brews.  On the January 31, 2013 a 'Tapping Party' will take place celebrating their latest brew, an IPA described as “a copper-colored, American-style India Pale Ale with a pronounced piney and citrus hop aroma."  The tapping party will take place from 4pm-6pm.

Are You a Mosaic Artist?

ArtReach Orlando is a fairly young non-profit here in Central Florida that works with children in under-served areas of Orange County. ArtReach supports creative, collaborative art projects between teachers, organizations and local artists. They believe arts integration enhances learning and empowers and encourages both learners and educators.

They are just wrapping up a mural project at Corner Lake Middle School near Bithlo and are ramping up for their Spring Projects, one of which will be in Apopka. They are looking for a local mosaic artist experienced in working with children and creating large scale murals out-of-doors.  If you are interested, or know someone who is, please contact ArtReach Orlando here with your resume and/or a link to your past work. This is a paying job for local artists.

Mobile Farmers Market New to Orlando | Local Roots

By Brendan O'Connor
Have you seen this truck parked behind Dandelion Cafe? Its got food geeks and urban planning nerds like me frothing at the mouth.

It's a mobile farmers market.

Not only is it mobile, which as you know, is super cool (Food Trucks anyone?), but all the produce is local *and* sustainably produced.

The folks running Local Roots are helping to fight food deserts while also giving back to the local economy and treading lightly on the fragile Florida environment. What's sexier than that?

Check them out on Facebook and see them each week at the *new* College Park Farmers Market Sundays 11am-3pm.

Toasted Crafted Grilled Cheese and Burgers in Winter Park Set to Open in February

After seeing a mysterious little sign near the corner of New England Ave and New York Ave in Winter Park that simple read "Toasted: Crafted Grill Cheese & Burgers" I was a bit confused until Scott Joseph, always on the prowl for the latest in local restaurant news, reported that Toasted will be Winter Park's newest eatery.

The fast casual restaurant takes over the former Lemon Grass Green Lemon Cafe space in the plaza that shares a parking lot with Whole Foods at the corner of Lakemont and Aloma Avenues.  While the grilled cheese takes center stage here there will be hamburgers, natural cut fries, and plenty of vegan options.  The restaurant is finishing final touches and plans to open in February. (Oh, and that mystery sign on New York Ave is where their office is located.)
