[VIDEO] Food Truck Culture in Los Angeles

This is about Los Angeles food trucks, but we're sure someone with a lot fo time of their hands will make one about Orlando's food truck scene real soon. Watch and enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at Food Truck Life:

Bring Each Room Back to "Ready" Before You Leave

A link to a story about ways to make your home happier was sent to me that had one sentence I connected with and believe in:

"Take about three minutes to bring each room back to “ready” before you depart it."
I do this with my kitchen, my living room and my bedroom. I want to walk out knowing that there is no unfinished business in the kitchen. I want to walk out of my house knowing that even if I should return at the end of the day, I can walk in and there is not unfinished business waiting for me. A made bed is a welcome sign you hang on your bedroom for yourself.

A living room and kitchen should greet you like they do in hotels. "Hey there! We're ready for you. Use us if you want. If no, we're ok! And clean!"

That is how a house feels "good" to me.

I just wanted to share that link and these thoughts.

Cycling vs Driving in Orlando: How Much Can You Save?

Mighk Wilson spoke at our panel called Cycling and Pedestrians in Orlando Panel which was part of an experiment we tried back in 2010 called TheDailyCity.com Panel Series. If you want to know about cycling as an alternative form of transportation, he's your guy.
He shared on his blog recently how much money he and his wife saved during 2012 just by biking rather than driving:
$486 in gasoline$1,478 in total vehicle ownership and usage costs (includes gasoline)2,654 pounds of carbon dioxide Read more of his article here to get more stats and to learn about Mighk Wilson.

The Human Figure in Bronze, Watercolor, Poured Metal and Wood as a Vehicle

The human figure has been drawn, painted, sculpted, carved, photographed and videotaped. Been there, done that. Two artists hope that the figures in their collection move beyond that to become "vehicles for conveying messages."

The Figure As Vehicle is a two-person art show running January 11 - March 2, 2013 at The Mount Dora Center for the Arts (138 East Fifth Avenue, Mount Dora, FL 32757).

None of the work is static, but infused with a sense of motion captured for a split second in bronze, watercolor, poured metal and wood.
Opening reception: Friday, January 11.Artist demos and Q&A: Thursday, January 24 and Thursday, February 21, 6-8pm. The show will be on display during the 38th annual Mount Dora Art Festival, February 2-3, 2013. Gallery hours: Monday through Friday 10am - 4pm and Saturday 10am - 2pm.
About the Artists:

Mount Dora Simpson Hotel Neon Sign Reveals History

In downtown Mount Dora, you'll notice an old unlit neon sign for the Simpson Hotel.

The Simpsons were the first homesteaders in Mount Dora in 1874.  The many business holdings in the area they'd soon come to acquire allowed them to be instrumental in building many of the city's original buildings.

They built the first private school building in 1912, the ice house, currently the Ice House Theater and of course, this hotel in 1947.

The Simpsons unsuccessfully campaigned for schools like Stetson and Rollins to be built in Mount Dora.

There is still a bed and breakfasst run by the Simpsons just around the corner from the Simpson Hotel sign.

Bike Racks As Public Art in Mount Dora @MountDora

We love these fun bike racks we found in Mount Dora, Florida. They do double duty by providing artwork for the park and a safe place to lock your bike. In Washington DCErie, and Omaha programs were put into place to allow artists to create unique bike racks. Wouldn't that be great in Orlando?

2012 Holiday Swap & Shop | Give Away and Bring Home Vintage Clothing

The 2012 Holiday version of the Swap & Shop Parties made popular by Other Peoples Property took place on December 14, 2012 in Ivanhoe Village. The event encourages participants to donate their old unused clothing and also shop for new vintage clothing. A percent of the sales go to Charity: Water and Mission of Hope Haiti. Then all the clothes that aren't bought were donated to a number of different charities including local homeless shelters, Dress for Success and the BETA Center. The indoor space allowed for plenty of room for all the clothes, including kids clothing and even jewelry. Photo Credit: Ashante Greenlee
