Playfest 2011 Schedule of Events Nov 3-6

It’s a common trope of superhero movies to tell the so-called origin story. We’re pretty familiar with the storylines; how a particular hero got his (or her, but almost always his) powers, what misadventures and hardships they befell before becoming the character that everyone identifies, etc. In many ways, Bruce Robinson’s ‘The Rum Diary’ is an origin story for nerds like me, who look at Hunter S. Thompson as a sort of literary superhero. Though it’s adapted from one of Thompson’s novels, it’s made fairly transparent that the main character, a journalist played by Johnny Depp, is a surrogate for the author himself. Though the film is enjoyable if ultimately a little underwhelming, it does end up painting a clearer picture of the journalist Thompson would become, a no-nonsense rabble-rouser who stood on the side of the little guy against big …

The Supervillains, a local reggae ska band, will be playing in the Orlando Calling Festival on Sunday, Nov.13 at 7:30 pm. Click here to read a previous post about Orlando Calling. The Supervillains comprises of drummer and vocalist Dominic “Dom” Maresco, guitarist and vocalist Scott “Skart” Suldo, bassist Daniel “Dan” Grundorf and keyboardist and guitarist Tom “T-Rex”. The playful band is currently on The Fall Out Tour with indie hip-hop artist D.P.
What are the band’s musical influences? Reggae, ska, punk rawk, hip-hop and rock. So lots!

Let's go: Art Basel Miami Beach Dec 1-4

From December 1 through 4, Miami Beach, Florida, will host the 10th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, the most prestigious art show in the Americas. More than 260 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa will take part, showcasing works by more than 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

To mark its 10th edition, Art Basel Miami Beach will inaugurate a new collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art on the Art Public sector, which will transform Collins Park with unique artworks and performances by renowned artists and emerging talents. For the first time, Art Video will be presented in SoundScape Park on the large-scale outdoor projection wall of the New World Center, designed by Frank Gehry. The free public viewings will be part of a number of special events and performances taking place across Miami Beach for the duration of the show to celebrate the 10th edition.

"Sweets and Sounds" at Pine Hills Community Performing Arts Center

The Pine Hills Community Performing Arts Center, a community-based nonprofit center dedicated to the celebration of the arts, arts education, and the revitalization of the Pine Hills Community, is putting on “Sweets and Sounds,” an open mic jazz jam and dessert party, October 30, 2011, 5-7pm. It will take place at the Pine Hills Community Performing Arts Center (5600 W. Colonial Drive, Orlando). The event is open to the public. Admission is $7.00. Park Ave CDs Pumokin Contest with Fitz and the Tantrucms

On Sunday, October 30 at 2:30pm, stop by Park Ave CDs for a pumpkin carving contest (the pumpkins must be pre-carved) and a special stripped-down set from Los Angeles soulsters Fitz and the Tantrums. The group will perform and then choose their favorite pumpkins from those brought in. Grand prize is a $50 PACDs gift certificate, $30 second prize and $20 third prize. Pre-carved pumpkins must be in the shop by 2:00pm that afternoon to be considered for the contest. See Fitz with the full band later that night at The Social.
