The Lowndes Shakespeare Center presents Terry Teachout’s “Satchmo at the Waldorf,” featuring a strong one-man performance by Dennis Neal as the iconic Louis Armstrong and Armstrong’s manager, Joe Glaser. Set in the dressing room at the Waldrof Astoria Hotel’s Empire Room, we meet a tired yet still charismatic Louis Armstrong preparing for what will be his last performance as he dies four months later. Armstrong talks about his troubled youth and growing up in poverty, his experiences on the road, race relations, his love for his wife Lucille and his relationship with businessman Joe Glaser all the while recording himself with a portable tape recorder for his book.
We watch how Jewish businessman Glaser played a role in the talented musician’s career and life as a manager and best friend. Glaser helped Armstrong gain popularity with white audiences, where the money was. When Glaser was not on…

Mama Fu's Take Two

We retweeted a story by the Orlando Business Journal about the chain Mama Fu's wanting to bring a location to Orlando, and were surprised to find two folks saying it'd already been tried here once before and one tweet from 2009 confirming it. We wrote the company and asked if they thought the chain would succeed here after the first try.

The 2009 tweet confirming it:

@TheFTBazaar is Our New Home for Food Truck Bazaar News

We're moving most of our food truck bazaar tweets away from @TheDailyCity twitter feed and onto it's own feed called TheFTbazaar. We think foodies will appreciate the separation and allow them to only know about our food event news. We also think non-foodies will appreciate it, since we tend to go a little twitter-heavy about the bazaar around bazaar time. This will (hopefully) make both parties happy and get the news to the people who want it most. And if it doesn't work, we'll dump it and go back to normal!

Also, if you haven't already, join our Bazaar Group on Facebook. We're almost up to 1,000 folks there. Again, that's a place strictly for bazaar news. Yum!

And speaking of foodies, we want to do two new food events in 2012: Confection Fest (an Orlando dessert festival) and ClandesDine (a not-so-secret food rave). Stay tuned for news about those events.
