Draft Global Beer Lounge and Grill at Amway Center Opens

Draft Global Beer Lounge and Grill, the brand new bar across the street from the Amway Center, had its opening night party Wednesday March 30, 2011 with Mayor Buddy Dyer and City Councilwoman Daisy Lynum on hand.

The interior is lovely, with a great view of the Amway Center. TVs are everywhere so you don't miss a second of the sports action. On opening night, it was fun and loud, but with an upscale vibe to it. Three bars are available as well as a full kitchen offering a large menu. (Photo Credit: Mark Baratelli)

Colonial De Stijl Design Slam

3-28-11 | Yesterday we shared a photo of the new Sam Flaxx on our twitter feed and got a fun message back from reader @beornborg:

"nice idea, but the grid composition is too rigid & static."

He let us in on the style of painting Sam Flaxx was going for (De Stijl) and we asked him to send in his own version so we could see what the building should look like, with the painting style done correctly. While we were waiting, we googled "De Stijl" to see what he was even talking about.

He replied "There are others that may want in on this. This could turn into a friendly contest. You can call it the De Stijl Design Slam" and sent us his own version (second photo below).

About his new version he writes "The design is heavily derived from a Mondrian painting. I made changes to accommodate the store's name and the lines of the building."

He goes on: "I believe Mondrian's aesthetic is more freer and open than what most people believe. I w…

Hawkers Asian Street Fare Gastropub

Hawkers (1103 N Mills Ave, Orlando, FL 32803) is a new restaurant that's claiming two food trends at once depending on which side of the building you look at. On the Oregon Street side of the building, it says "street fare" while on the Mills Avenue side it says "gastropub." Have you been yet? Is it a gastropub, street food, both, or neither? Read more about it on Yelp.

3rd Annual Outsider Art Fair in Winter Park Returns After Original Producer Moves to California

The very first Outsider Art Fair was March 21-22, 2009, held at Frames Forever & Art Gallery (941 Orange Ave Winter Park, FL 32789) which featured a parking lot full of artists not involved in the concurrently-running Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival happening just down the street in Central Park. A highlight of the fair was Brian Feldman's Sleepwalk, which invited visitors to walk across a see-thru box while Feldman slept inside.

The second incarnation of the fair was March 20, 2010, also occurring simultaneously as the Winter Park Art Festival chugged along the same day down the street.

The fair was produced by the then-owner of Frames Forever, Katie Windish. She has since sold her frame shop and moved to California.

The new owners, Kim Marshall and Tracy Gasinski, are keeping the Outside Art Fair alive and putting it on this year April 23, 2011, 11am - 5pm at the same location. No vendor, artist, food or music names have been released yet. If you'd like to get involved, c…

Informational Meeting About Donating Bone Marrow

By: Jen Thuy-Tien

Staff Page | Facebook | Twitter

This is different from my usual posts but an important meeting has come to my attention. On Tuesday, March 29 at Valencia Community College’s west campus, Phi Theta Kappa and Kids Beating Cancer are holding a meeting to inform people how they can become bone marrow donors. According to the Puget Sound Blood Center, there are thousands of people who need bone marrow transplants every year but about 70 percent do not have a genetically matched family member who can donate. Then, that means, the patients' lives depend on finding unrelated people, often within their own ethnic group, with a compatible tissue type, who is willing to donate marrow for them. This is where you can make a difference.

Below is a flyer with information about the meeting.
Come to the meeting on Tuesday, March 29 and support Phi Theta Kappa and Kids Beating Cancer to raise awareness about the need for bone marrow donations and learn ab…

Circle Mirror Transformation: Mad Cow’s Latest Inspires Even Non-Actors

By Sultana Ali
Contributing Writer

I didn’t know I was attending the play until my boyfriend told me the night before that there was a ticket for me. Suddenly I was going to an opening night of a play Friday; a play of which I knew nothing about. Lordy, what if I ran into someone I knew in the lobby of Mad Cow Theatre and they asked me for my thoughts on the playwright?! I calmed my nerves and reassured myself that the artsy side of my brain would kick in at some point. The lights dimmed and a stage with bodies across the floor came to life slowly performing what I would find out later was an acting exercise; actors close their eyes and “feel” the count until they don’t stumble over one another when they chime in. The exercise is about being present and connected with one another, a technique I found useful in watching the play as well.

The play setting is a six week acting class, a familiar scene to many around me. I confess I was lost for the first ten minutes as much of the audience c…

Yeah, that's what I thought.

As ever, if there's something else you're excited about, chuck it in the comments!

Monday – March 21

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings / Peter Baldwin at the Beacham

The newest music venue in downtown Orlando brings one of America’s finest live acts, and a local favourite. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are remarkable. Nobody is allowed to not dance at their shows. I think it’s actually written in small print on their tickets. “Failure to get down may result in ejection from venue and/or scorn and pity from fellow concertgoers”. Horns, strings, soul and energy. What else are you going to do on a Monday night? Get there early for Peter Baldwin’s sensitive and calm soul sound.

The legendary bass player (Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Stooges) is nothing if not a hard worker…

LIVESTRONG® Community Impact Project Awards Funding to MD Anderson Cancer Center

Last Fall, The LIVESTRONG® Community Impact Project awarded 63 organizations over $800,000 in grants to help people affected by Cancer, and Orlando's own MD Anderson Cancer Center was among the grant winners. The center was awarded $20,000 after getting enough votes during the two week online voting period.

MD Anderson Cancer Center and United Arts of Central Florida will work together to carry out The Creative Center’s Artists-in-Residence program, which will offer patients the opportunity to learn about and become absorbed in their own creative resources as they meet the challenges of diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. The program will work bedside and in small group settings with men, women and children – in oncology units, bone marrow transplant units, intensive care/respiratory units, hospice and palliative care programs.

High Speed Rail in Florida Not Dead: Mayors to Apply in Next Funding Cycle

The effort to secure Florida’s immediate inclusion in the creation of a national high speed rail network ended Friday when it was determined there wasn’t enough time for a local authority made up of the cities of Orlando, Tampa, Lakeland and Miami to satisfy the federal application requirements to apply for the 2.4 billion dollars which was recently rejected by Florida’s governor.

The group of local governments had been exploring possible public-private partnerships that would have allowed construction of the Orlando to Tampa line to begin this year under the same terms as the deal that was rejected by Governor Rick Scott: zero cost and zero risk to taxpayers.

In order to move forward right now, the newly-created entity would still need to work with the state of Florida to secure the right-of-way for the train, a level of cooperation which Governor Scott has signaled would not occur.

Upon making this determination, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, Lakeland Mayor Gow …

Morse Museum Tiffany Daffodil Terrace in Winter Park

By Thomas Thorspecken
Analog Artist Digital World

On the first Friday of each month the Morse Museum (445 North Park Avenue ), holds an open house offering free admission to the public between 4 and 8pm. I decided it was time to stop in and see the new wing which opened last month. I brought along my digital drawing tablet and my handy artists stool for my relaxing afternoon sketch. When I entered the museum I was told I would have to check my artists stool. I didn't complain, I just handed it over. I would simply have to stand in one spot for several hours. I made a bee-line back to the new wing. I knew I wanted to sketch the Daffodil Terrace.

I pulled out my tablet and opened Sketchbook Pro. Within a minute the guard walked up to me and said, "There is no sketching in the Museum." Fuming I explained that I had sketched there before with no problem. He said, "Sorry that is the policy." I pulled out my iPhone and immediately sent out a tweet angrily announcing t…
