How's this for a novelty: This column is actually going up on a Monday as it's supposed to! As ever, if there's something else going on that you're excited about, why not mention it in the comments?

Monday - January 31st

Yonder Mountain String Band at the Social
There might be some eclectic dancing on the floor, and some of the wackier kinds of tobacco in the air, as the legends of bluegrass-inspired rock and roll take the Social stage. This show is billed as "An Evening With..." which to me suggests that it'll be more memorable than just a regular show. Either way, it'll be jam-tastic.

Thursday - February 3rd

Smith Westerns at Backbooth
This year is only a month old, but one of the most-buzzed-about records it has birthed is 'Dye It Blonde,' the second long-player from Chicago's Smith Westerns. I really like the album a whole lot, but the AV Club's reviewer put it much better th…

Follow the Orlando SweetUp twitter account.

What is a "Sweet Up"? Based on their event page from 2009, a "Sweet Up" is this: "Make sure you make your dentist appointment... We've done the Twitter meetups (tweetup), now it's time for a SWEETup! Lots of candy, cake, cupcakes, chocolate - whatever we can get our hands on... Price of admission: Bring your favorite treat! Seeing as though, this will not be at a restaurant or bar, only some beverages will be provided. If you would like to bring something to drink with you as well, that would be wonderful! The more the merrier!"

The first "Sweet Up Orlando" was held at the Winter Park Wedding Chapel and featured sweets from visitors as well as pros including @KernelEncore, @SweetByHolly and @JeremiahsIce.

Jimmy Eat World and David Bazan at the House of Blues| Feb. 4, 2011

On Friday, February 4, Jimmy Eat World with Special Guest David Bazan will be playing at the House of Blues in Orlando. Doors open at 7:30 pm and the show starts at 8:30 pm. I’m expecting a great concert because I’m a big fan of Jimmy Eat World. Bleed American is one of my favorite albums. The band released their latest album last September, “Invented.” I’m also really looking forward to seeing David Bazan. Some may know Bazan because he was the lead singer of Pedro the Lion, a Christian/indie rock band. If you’re into soothing, heartfelt and spiritual music, you should give Bazan a chance. I started listening to Bazan a few months ago. Specifically, his most recently released album, “Curse Your Branches.” The album is great. The lyrics are poetic, the songs are about struggles in life and Bazan has a great, soothing voice. To purchase tickets for the show visit Ticketmaster or the House of Blue’s website and to learn …

Winter Park Playhouse Presents Five Course Love

By Mark Baratelli

The Winter Park Playhouse opened a fun, broad, silly musical last weekend called "Five Course Love" that will just run three more weekends before it closes... and I'm in the cast!

"Five Course Love" a quick, fun 90-minute musical where three actors play fifteen characters. The comedy is broad, obvious and wacky. Think Carol Burnett. I do my best to keep up with the other two actors, both of whom have terrific voices and great comedic timing. You probably know Michelle Knight from her recent lead roles in the Orlando Philharmonic / Mad Cow Theatre productions of Guys & Dolls (Sara Brown) and My Fair Lady (Eliza Doolittle). And you'll remember Chris from his role in the very successful 2010 Orlando Fringe show "The Great American Trailer Park Musical," which walked away with a slew of TheDailyCity.com Audience Choice Awards.

Performances Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and , Saturdays, Sundays & Thursd…

Season subscriptions are available by calling (407) 447-1700 or online at www.orlandoshakes.org and in person at the box office located inside the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, 812 East Rollins Street in Orlando’s Loch Haven Cultural Park. Box Office hours are 12pm to show time, Tuesday-Saturday, and one hour prior to show time on Sundays for walk up sales. Garden Theatre Presents SHHH! Silent Comedy Perfect For Families

"Shhhh!" is the latest silent comedy theatrical offering from PB&J Theatre Factory running February 11-27, 2011 at Garden Theatre (160 West Plant Street, Winter Garden). Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm. Valentine’s Show: Monday, February 14 at 8pm. Tickets: $18 ($15 for seniors/students). Get tickets: 407-877-GRDN (4736) or online.

About: The entire play is told without the actors uttering a single word! A pair of charismatic crooks could be in over their heads when they adopt a mistakenly abandoned hotel as their hideout. Safe from the cops? Yes. Safe from guests? That’s a different story. Thrust into chaos, the crooks must pose as innkeepers to keep their felonious identities concealed. Little do they know, however, the guests they’re hiding from have secrets of their own. Mayhem! Suspense! Hilarity! It’s an all new mystery/comedy as told only by PB&J Theatre Factory.

This Week In Gigs

By Samir Mathur Contributing writer Staff page | Twitter | Tumblr
Got a few shows to look forward to at Backbooth this week, as part of the Parafora Anniversary Week. Who doesn't love a good celebration? As ever, if there's something I've left out that you are excited about, post a comment!
Tuesday - January 25th
Yo La Tengo at the Social
Just reposted my November blog about this. So read that.
Wednesday - January 26th
Little Dragon at Backbooth and at Park Ave CDs.

The first I heard of Little Dragon was on last year's Gorillaz album, so I was happy to investigate some more and find that they'd put out two albums of light, pleasant electronica that you can also dance to. They just played at the L.A. Natural History Museum (cool!), where a review described them as hitting "an evocative sweet spot of laptop noodling, Motown bass grooves and the expertly fussy percussion of Erik Bodin." Kind of like the Notwist, if they had this guy Erik Bodin, then. They're one…

Repost: Yo La Tengo at the Social: Tonight

I'm snowed in at work (figuratively), so my This Week in Gigs column may not be up til later today. Sorry! But here's a reminder of a show that I mentioned back in November, which takes place tonight.

Yo La Tengo will play The Social on January 25. 2011.

This show is almost three months away, but it sounds really exciting and fun, so I’m giving you plenty of notice. Yo La Tengo are indie rock’s grandparents. They’ve released about six hundred albums in a career that’s older than I am, and they continue to get better and better. They’re coming to the Social in January, which is cool but not exactly big news - they play Florida fairly often – but wait til you hear this tour’s big gimmick. The show will be divided into two 45-minute halves – the second of which will be a standard YLT set…

But the first half will be determined by the spin of a wheel, and could go one of seven ways. Maybe they’ll play a set’s worth of songs from one of…

Food Trend: Is Gourmet Ice the next Pie, Food Truck, Artisanal Soda, FroYo, Pizza Lolly Pop, Cake Pop, Cupcake, Mini Cupcake, Cookie on a Stick, Donut or Mini Donut?

Gourmet ice is now a permanent part of cocktail culture. The LA company Névé Luxury Ice Company serves it in large chunks, which keeps the drink cold and doesn't water down the drink. They come in three shapes to match glass size and drink: tall and skinny, square and round. There's also some science behind it according to The Atlantic:
"...the key lies in three principles—filtration, aging, and shape. The water is filtered twice, using reverse osmosis, through which he says the company loses about eight ounces of water for every one ounce preserved. Once purified, the water is then frozen, where it is aged for at least 48 hours, increasing its density and making it colder and stronger. Though other ice connoisseurs don't age their frozen cubes, Dozois considers this step so integral to his product that he took the name Névé, the word for compacted snow that ultimately becomes glacial ice."Though its not a food per se, we're still calling it a food trend. Will…

Stardust Lounge | Downtown Orlando Retro Bar

The last time I was in the bar in the basement at 431 East Central Blvd., it was 1998. I'd just finished performing as an Ensemble Apprentice at a SAK Comedy Lab show. It was probably 10 or 11pm. The ensemble back then were people I looked up to and admired. I was new to improv and was soaking everything they did on stage up. They were big, big people in my eyes. They were brilliant and knew how to hold the audience in the palm of their hands, always knew the right thing to say on stage, the right choice to make. It was second nature to them. So to be asked to go hang out with them after shows was an honor.

Back then, this basement bar was a dive. Not a dump, just an undecorated, unpretentious room for boozing and hanging. Couple pool tables, cheap beer, not much else.

I happened to be in the area a couple days ago so I went inside for a look. Wow! Now called Stardust Lounge, the place is a fantastic throwback retro 1950s club with perfectly per…

CarVersations | Strangers Start Your Mouth Engines

January 21, 2011 | TheDailyCity.com Mobile Art Show is an official venue and official part of Downtown Arts District's Third Thursdays Gallery Crawl, a large monthly visual arts event that takes place in downtown Orlando. We are very grateful for City Arts Factory's continued support of our endeavors.

The idea of the show is that art and creativity should not be tied down to a location, that it can be picked up and brought anywhere. This allows for cross-pollination of artists into neighborhoods they might not normally get the chance to have their work seen in, and sometimes it means neighborhoods and areas of town void of art and creativity can, for a few hours, enjoy what other neighborhoods have on a regular basis.

Leu Gardens (1920 N. Forest Ave., Orlando, FL 32803) hosted its final camelia show Saturday and Sunday, January 15 - 16, 2011, from 9am-5pm. The Camellia Society of Central Florida will move its annual celebration of the camellia from Leu Gardens to Mead Gardens in Winter Park January 12, 2012.

On Sunday, the mood in the large airy hall full of black-wrapped tables covered in flower-filled bottles was chipper and light. Small gaggles of flower lovers hovered, stared and admired the hundreds of camellias on display. Every now and then, one of the organizers would make an announcement that he was about to give a talk on various topics such as how to make your flowers bloom sooner and which flowers on which tables were grown with fertilizers.

VIDEO: Mark Goes to Otronicon Probably for the Last Time

By Mark Baratelli Owner Staff Page

I know nothing about video games, social mores or the consequences of putting awkward video of myself online, so its only natural I walk around and explore Otronicon, Orlando Science Center's annual gigantic tech/gaming/simulation festival, with a cameraman. I don't promise you'll walk away knowing any more about Otronicon than you did before you clicked "play," but I guarantee you will have more respect for professional journalists and less respect for me in general. And for that, I thank you. Push play.

No Age at Backbooth

A no-nonsense two piece from the City of Angels, No Age are coming to blow you away with their stripped-down, melody-driven but still-noisy rock-and-roll. (So many hyphens in that sentence.) No Age’s latest album, ‘Everything in Between’, sounds like they spent more time on it than previous works, and the extra layer of polish makes for a much more accomplished album. Still, they’ll rock the nose off of your face, so be careful out there.
