'Exit Through the Gift Shop' at the Enzian

By Samir Mathur
Contributing writer

Exit Through The Gift Shop will play at the Enzian Theater from tomorrow, Friday, October 1st, for one week. Go to their site for show times and to buy tickets.

There’s a lot of mystery around ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’, which ought to make for fun post-screening discussions. For one thing, it’s billed as “A Banksy Film,” after the notoriously secretive British street artist whose work can make headlines back home, but the level of Banksy’s involvement here is very ambiguous. Is it a documentary about the man and his work? Well, he barely appears for the first half hour; most of that time tells the tale of another guy, called Thierry who lives in Los Angeles and likes to record everything around him on his video camera. Thierry falls in with some street artists, including Shepherd Fairey (of Obama HOPE poster fame), and gets some genuinely exciting footage of them, in the dead of night, leaving their marks at various locations. There’s a real thrill…

LCD Soundsystem/Sleigh Bells at Hard Rock Live

By Samir Mathur
Contributing writer

Update: We've got three pairs of tickets to give away for this one, click here to see how you can win.

From the moment LCD Soundsystem first showed up, something was a little off about them. Their debut single was basically a list of every ultra-hip band that’s been namedropped by awful people since the 1970s. And yet it was delivered in a monotone that suggested that maybe the singer’s tongue was firmly in his cheek. Since then, over three albums, the band has become both critically acclaimed, and fairly well-liked by real people. Their latest, This is Happening, even cracked the Billboard Top Ten, no small feat considering that almost all its songs clock in north of eight minutes. Oh, and the only track that could’ve reached a bigger audience had a video that was basically Funny Games if it was even more of a horrific nightmare, and so was only seen on the internet. They can play it rock (‘Movements’), play it dance (‘Us V. Them’), play it tende…

Chris Scala Speaks About Latest Public Art Piece "Puzzle"

Sept 27, 2010 | If you drove down Princeton Street near the intersection fo Alden anytime between August 18 and September 18, 2010, you probably noticed giant yellow shapes on the lawn at the corner. See photos here. Those shapes made up the art piece called "Puzzle," created by visual artist Chris Scala. We had the chance to sit down with Scala and record an interview. Click the play button on the player below to listen, or download the mp3.

Listen to Interview with Chris Scala:

For "Puzzle," 18 eight foot yellow plastic pieces, each identical in shape, were moved into various configurations every two days during the showing by the artist and one assistant, giving the more than 40,000 drivers that pass the site each day as well as the hospital employees with windows looking onto the lawn something fun and unexpected to look at.

If you missed seeing the 18 pieces that make up "Puzzle", they will make an Orlando return in November 2010 when the Orlando Sha…

Video: We Visit the Audubon Park Community Market

Every Monday night 6pm-10pm, the Audubon Park Community Market takes over the Stardust Coffee parking lot. Its located in the Audubon Park business district, an area strewn with tractor tire-sized round cement planters (some painted a poo-brown), popular record stores and cupcake shops decorated with birds.

We set up a table Monday night at the market to pimp our blog to the passersby. Most people passered-by without so much as a "what is this?" or "This isn't locally-produced goat cheese. Get out." They took one look at me, my nose in my laptop, and my table covered in shoddy flyers and scurried past. I felt like a perfume lady at Dillards forced to spray Fergie's latest scent on stranger's inner wrists.

A few wanted to know about Taco Truck Taste Test. Once they learned what it was, they took a shoddy flyer. Hope they show up. Having a blog table at this market is wonderful. You see how known you are and how far you need to go. Grateful they let me …

BEER:30 at Orlando Brewing

Lucas Widrick
Contributing Writer
Staff Page

Though there were a lot of people at Orlando Brewing this past Saturday to take part in a little piece of Bavarian beer culture, I am sure a few of you did not make it out to sample their Oktoberfest beer release. My wife and I were able to go down for a few hours and were treated to a few beers by George Cain (the Director of Marketing for Orlando Brewing). You always drink the first beer to be polite, but you continue to drink if you like what was in the glass. Let’s just say that we had no problem diving into our second beer and only our schedule prevented us from likely continuing on from there!

Here is a little of what you missed:

The early crowd

Enjoying a beer with George

Let the cornhole tournament begin!

If the Oktoberfest beer supply does not run dry by this Thursday, September 30 you will have some additional incentive to get down to Orlando Brewing to try it as it will officially be BEER:30 and that means all Orlando Brewing beers wi…

You Can Ride a Bike In Orlando If You Let Keri Show You How

Keri Caffrey is an active spokesperson for cycling in Orlando. Along with her numerous appearances and her website, she was a member of our Pedestrians and Cycling in Orlando Panel back in March 2010. She also had a table at Saturday's One Less Car event. She spoke with me briefly about the cycling courses she offers that show cyclists how to ride properly in Orlando traffic. I've heard her speak, met her, spoken with her and seen her videos of her cycling in full-on Orlando traffic. The woman knows cycling. And in this town, she's a cyclist's best ally.

Sign up now for her three-part course in October called Cycling Savvy . Below is the schedule.

The Ataris at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago

By Jen Thuy-Tien
Contributing Writer
Staff Page

I know Orlando has a lot of the Ataris fans. Safe to say, there are probably more fans for their older material than their newer stuff. However, on my recent trip to Chicago, I caught the Ataris’ show at the Beat Kitchen. The Ataris played “This Dairy,” “The Boys of Summer,” “So Long Astoria” and requests from the audience. The Ataris definitely got the place rockin’ with their intimate concert. The band sounded great live. Also, a mosh pit quickly formed when Kris Roe, lead singer of the Ataris, jumped off the stage and onto the floor towards the end of the show. I had a great experience seeing the Ataris live for the first time.
Just in case you will be visiting any of the following towns in October, check out the Ataris on “The Ataris East Coast Tour with Don’t Panic.”

Sonesta Hotel Starbucks: Cheaper

September 27, 2010
By Mark Baratelli

If you live or work downtown, this might be of use to you.

On Sunday, when a friend told me he was attending a free creativity drop-in workshop held in one of the ballrooms at the Sonesta Hotel, I invited myself. The workshop ended up being a "get out of your comfort zone" type thing. I got to hear an opera singer sing "Summertime" with what I assume are the original lyrics, page through participant's life books (photo albums showing the person's life with a page dedicated to each year of their life) and admit to a group of six that one thing I do not do in groups is listen well.

When the group hugs, dancing in kicklines and singing the national anthem began, I snuck out. Before exiting the building, I stopped by the Starbucks in the lobby and got served by the owner. I noticed the price of the pre-packaged box I was buying with bagel, cream cheese, hard boiled egg, grapes and apple slices was way cheaper than I a…

Amely, a rock band from Orlando, Florida, signed onto Fearless Records last January. The band is composed of vocalist Petie Pizarro, drummer Nate Parsell, bass player Patrick Ridgen and guitarist Brandon Walden. Amely was first a studio project begun by Pizarro. The project turned into something more after the additions of Parsell, Ridgen and Walden. Amely released their debut EP, Hello World, this month.
This month, Amely released their debut EP, Hello World. How long did it take for you guys to complete the album?
It took a long time. We started last January. We went to a studio and recorded for two and a half weeks in Atlanta. We tried out different producers in March. Then we flew over to L.A. to finish the second half of the EP.
For people who have not listened to the EP Hello World, what can they expect?
A long EP. There’s eight songs. We tried to give people as much material as we could for an EP. They can expect variety, something for …

Adventures in Wedding Planning | Week Three

This week I learned a lot:
It's really hard to please both parents; compromises have to be madeThe assumption is true - grooms couldn't care less about flowers/seating/dresses/etc (but they DO get excited for food tastings) It's possible to get discounts (and awesome when it happens)The Knot message board is ridiculousRelated, FH = future husband. I had to Google it. This site is pretty funnyAfter much deliberation, we finally chose our venue. After reading your comments, we looked into The Summerlin House, which was lovely, as well as Dubsdread, which was historic and perfectly vintage. However, we ended up deciding on...the Orlando Science Center! It was actually the first place we visited and instantly fell in love with. It's quirky, fun and fantastic (like us?). We weren't sure at first due to price, but they worked hard with us and we ended up getting an amazing package. We love our coordinator there, and are ridi…

David Bazan/The Mynabirds at the Social

By Samir Mathur
Contributing writer

There's a super-interesting double-bill coming to the Social next week. First up are Saddle Creek records’ The Mynabirds, whose debut album ‘What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood’ came out earlier this year and has been one of my go-to records over the summer. I’m a grade-A sucker for modern day bands with female vocalists, whose music sounds like it was recorded in the 1960s in Detroit. The Mynabirds write gorgeous, warm songs that belongs in small, intimate rooms like the Social. Think Dusty Springfield, The Shangri-La’s and Cat Power – Laura Berhenn’s voice plus the band’s rich, brassy arrangements are not to be missed. Check out their music video below, especially if you're a fan of food fights.

David Bazan, meanwhile, will be known to many as the former leader of the band Pedro the Lion. His debut solo album, ‘Curse Your Branches’, came out last year and is a brutally personal and honest discussion of Bazan’s troubles with alcoholi…

One Less Car Orlando: A Celebration of Transportation Alternatives

One Less Car Orlando, A Celebration of Transportation Alternatives, is Saturday, September 25, 2010, 10am-4pm at the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Community Center (946 N. Mills Ave, Orlando, FL). We are proud to be the Media Sponsor for this fantastic event.

About: The goal is to encourage people to park their cars a little more and explore the benefits of alternative transportation -- environmental, mental and physical, and community engagement. Would you like to carpool, but don't know anyone else who carpools? These questions and more will be answered at One Less Car Orlando.

In addition to an expo on the main floor of The Center, we're having a speaker series we're calling Park-N-Chats:
11:00 am: Cristina Cruz from Got Bikes will be chatting about bike history, the benefits of biking, and where …
