The battle in Orlando was hosted by D.R.E.S. tha BEATnik and Orlando’s own MADD ILLZ. Florida’s ultimate emcee was chosen by Orlando rappers, Swamburger and Drect and Minnesota’s Brother Ali. Harry Potter and the Really Long Lines

By Lauren Gibaldi
Contributing Writer
Staff Page

As a Harry Potter enthusiast, I’ve been dying to check out the new park. Finally, this past Tuesday, I had the chance to. For those who, like me, dare tempt fate and want to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure this summer while the tourists are still in bloom, here’s some advice.

Pick your day. From what I hear, Tuesdays and Sundays are the best days to go. Don’t even try Saturday.
Don’t go early. Many people assume getting there as soon as the doors open may grant you instant access. Not so much. Hotel guests get in first, so they’re already queuing up. Once the gates are actually opened, you have to wait in line just to get INSIDE the Wizarding World. The line isn’t even for the rides – it’s just to see the area. When I got in the park, the line went from the front of Wizarding World, through Jurassic Park, and halfway through Toon Lagoon. This was a Tuesday morning, not even a weekend.  Clearly, I didn’t wa…

Artist in Residence | Doug Rhoedehamel

Artist In Residence
a survival technique by Doug Rhodehamel

Coming off of two very large endeavors - the SPORE Project and LUMINEUX, my art habit has once again exhausted my finances and resources. and, once again... I'm teetering on the brink of homelessness. This time I've decided to have a bit more fun with it.

I've always wanted to build my own house. Now I'm finally doing it... sort of. Using my new favorite building material, discardboard (discarded cardboard) I've designed and constructed my very own house. It's small, folds up and fits in my car. Why you ask? So I can bring it to you!

IHOP | Your Source for Balloon Hats, Wifi and Breakfast

By Mark Baratelli
Creative Director
The Daily City

I enjoy my local coffee and diner spots more than a hug from Santa, but I have to tell you about my most recent visit to IHOP. I had work to do, but my friend demanded I go eat with them. I knew IHOP had wifi, so I brought the laptop with me. The speed is fine: I uploaded 30 photos to flickr and put out a post and never got impatient. The food is what it is: not impressive. But as I was walking in, I held the door open for a parade of three little girls walking out, each with their own crown made from balloons. Wha? This short person with a belt dangling with unfilled balloons said hello to us as we were seated by the IHOP waitress. I asked for a crown with a tall balloon stuck on top and this is what I got! Hilarious!

Yeah its crap food, but with it having wifi, being open 24 hours a day (I recently went at 2am to work) and providing balloon hats (who doesn't need one every now and then?), I'll be back.

Publix Greenwise Market Not Coming to a Winter Park Near You

We are disappointed to see that the new Publix being built right next to Whole Foods Market is not a Publix GreenWise Market. Seems like a no-brainer to build one to compete. Instead, it'll be a standard Publix. Boo. (Source: Brian Feldman)

What is a Publix GreenWise Market?
(From their website) Many people today are looking for more natural and organic choices. They want to avoid foods raised with pesticides and chemicals, hormones and antibiotics. They're looking for groceries that are less processed and more pure. It was to meet these needs that we decided to open our Publix GreenWise Market stores.

They offer more than a wide array of organic, all-natural, and earth-friendly items, however. We wanted to offer a truly enjoyable experience, full of conveniences and exciting products and flavors. That's why we included a Prepared Foods section with freshly made international cuisine; curbside pickup for those prepared foods (select locations); and event planning and cooking…

Central Florida TweetUp at Enzian Theater

The networking group Doterati and the local site Central Florida Top 5 paired up to host the Central Florida TweetUp July 22, 2010 at the Enzian Theater's outside bar, Eden. About 75 people talked beneath the giant oak trees, drank the sweet (and cheap) drinks and got to meet face-to-face with people they usually only communicate with online through Twitter, blogs and Facebook. Kudos to the organizers for producing and Enzian for hosting. Can't wait for the next one.

Our Art Show Gets A Spot on Official Downtown Orlando Guide

By Mark Baratelli
Creative Director, The Daily City

I shared earlier that one of our live events, Mobile Art Show, got listed as one of the official galleries of the Third Thursdays Gallery Hop in the May 20-26 edition of the Orlando Weekly.

Here's some more fun news: we are now listed in the Official Downtown Orlando Guide, a thick brochure for tourists and locals created by the Downtown Development Board! In the listing of "Third Thursday Gallery Hop Participants" right in the center the guide on the guide map, there we are! #74!

This is cool for the city to do because its an "art show in a UHaul" and yet they don't snub their noses at it: they list it right along with Orlando City Hall, Kush, Mother Falcon, Blank Space and others.

So cool. This Mobile Art Show event was something I tried in 2009 as a lark and here we are, over a year later, on a city map. Thank you City of Orlando and the Downtown Development Board! And an even bigger tha…

Blue Smoke Burger Served 24 Hour Eviction Notice

We just happened to be walking by the dead "Blue Smoke Burger" in downtown Orlando and saw they got served a "final 24 hour eviction notice." The place was pretty much empty except for a few beer bottles and some strewn postcards.

What happend to this place? It went from the very pretty "The Black Olive" (Where we held our weekly 'Martini Tuessday' events Jan-Feb 2010) to "Blue Smoke Burger" (where we never went due to reading two bad reviews from Scott Joseph and Yelp) to closed. RIP.

A Recap: Vans Warped Tour 2010

By Jen Thuy-Tien
Contributing Writer
Staff Page

It's a day later and I am still experiencing the thrill and madness of Vans Warped Tour 2010. It has always been known as the rock event of the year. This year was no exception. Big name bands such as Sum 41, Alkaline Trio, We The Kings, Emarosa, Mayday Parade and Hey Monday were on the list. In addition, up and comers like Breathe Carolina, Disco Curtis, We Are The In Crowd, Ionia, Fake Problems, Kelsey and The Chaos, Ice Nine Kills, Closure in Moscow and Artist vs. Poet. The Vans Warped Tour is definitely one of the highlights of my own summer. It is one of the few times of the year where thousands of people unify for the single purpose of indulging in musical awesomeness.

Vans Warped Tour 2010 started in Carson City, California on June 25 and is ending in Hillsboro, Oregon on August 15. Orlando was midway on the tour’s schedule, on July 25, and was held at the Central Florida Fairgrounds. For ten hours, thousands of music lovers inhab…

I caught the soft opening of the brand new Blue Bird Bake Shop Sunday July 25, 2010 in the Audubon Park district. This adorable shop owned by couple Jeff and Joel, is a stunning addition to not only the neighborhood but to the city. They're grand opening is Saturday, July 31st!

We fell in love with BBBS cupcakes at PomPoms, so we already know they rock. At the new shop, they're also carrying muffins, scones, coffee and will soon slowly roll out sandwiches and salads.

Photos of what to expect at this Friday's Taco Truck Taste Test

Taco Truck Taste Test #5

Meet at the parking lot of Tacos Del Rio (9785 South Orange Blossom Trail, Orlando FL 32837). There are several taco trucks in that area within walking distance serving a variety of spanish treats. Note: Vegan options are extremely limited.

Your humble Editor, Mark Baratelli, and one of our readers (who actually got the ball rolling to bring back TTTT) Jorge Mendoza, will be on hand as hosts to guide you through the taco truck experience. Jorge is fluent in Spanish and very familiar with the taco trucks (yes, there are more than one!)…
