The Runaways | Movie Review

by Mark Baratelli
Published March 30, 2010

The story of "The Runaways" is simple and sometimes stretched, but seeing this 1970s power band go from obscurity to Japanese fame through director Floria Sigismondi's editing is a fun ride overall.

Joan Jett (Kristin Stewart) is a brave teen walking up to music producer Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) at the Rodney Bingenheimer-owned English Disco on Sunset Strip in the early 1970s. The whacked-out Fowley teams her up with a few straggling female musicians and forms a lady-band via multiple abusive (yet helpful) rehearsals in the crummy intestines of a one-room trailer. "The Runaways" is born.

Best Worst Movie | 2010 Florida Film Festival

by Mark Baratelli
Published March 29, 2010

Don't bother reading this review for Best Worst Movie. Just buy a ticket and see it April 12 or 14, 2010 at the Winter Park Village Cinemas.

BWM is a quality documentation of underground cult classic status being thrust onto a cast of mishappen, charming characters. A terrible 90s film, Troll 2, is resurrected by American hipsters (not said in a derogatory way) as the second coming, sparking a sold out, standing ovation showing at Upright Citizens Brigade NYC, a "Midnite For Maniacs" showing in San Francisco and an successful outdoor showing on a blow up screen in some town I forget the name of. Several fans across the US are shown speaking to their passion for this film. Conversely, the film is ignored at a horror convention, unknown at a London sci fi convention and disliked at a showing in one of the star's hometowns.

Meth | 2010 Florida Film Festival

by Mark Baratelli
Published March 29, 2010

"Meth" is a 24 minute "Requiem For a Dream"-ish short by 13-year tv production veteran Michael Maney about a Meth addict with a heart of whatever's the opposite of gold. The main character Nikki, a skanky drug fiend, wastes her money on meth till she's broke, but curiously never wastes down to the frail runway skin-and-bones I thought was the hidden benefit of drug abuse. Her child-having sister lets her have it in a few brief "You're a drug addict" phone scenes, while a pawn shop-owning friend refuses to buy a styrofoam head-topped $20 mannequin. Nikki, said meth addict, eventually does logic battle with that mannequin. Enjoying the ability to reappear inside her gigantic upstairs loft after being burned, let alone talk and blink Amanda Seyfried-sized eyes, the mannequin makes demands of Nikki that lead to a surprise ending. The "you know something's coming but you don't know what" …

The Pollock Project

The Pollock Project was Sunday March 28, 2010 at 2pm at The Mennello Museum of American Art. (Video by Brian Feldman) It was a collaborative effort between DRIP and Beth Marshall Presents. We told you about it March 20, 2010. If you missed it, watch the video below. (We've eliminated our calendar so you gotta check back daily to keep up with notices like those.)

Sea World (and animal captivity) the Target of Performance Artist Brian Feldman's Latest Project

“The tragic death of the trainer suggests that maybe we have outgrown the need to keep such wild, enormous, complex, intelligent and free-ranging animals in captivity, where their behavior is not only unnatural, it can become pathological.” – Jean-Michel Cousteau

“...building a tank the size of Rhode Island wouldn’t be large enough for a six-ton male such as Tilikum, an animal capable of swimming 100 miles in a day.” - Whale Expert

Brian Feldman endures 18 hours of confinement in a stranger’s bathtub, one hour for each year* Tilikum the orca has been held captive in a space of comparative size at SeaWorld® Orlando. *since January 9, 1992

The Runaways

The Runaways comes out April 9, 1010. We're seeing a screening next week. Review to come.

About the film: The Runaways follows two friends, Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. They fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself—and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock ’n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten.

Sea World, Orlando City Hall and several Orlando businesses join expected millions in turning lights off

Earth Hour 2010, expected to be the " largest-ever call to action on climate change" asks you simply to turn off your lights Saturday, March 27th from 8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Its a global event in which people across the world turn out their lights for one hour. Last year it attracted more than 80 million participants in the U.S. and nearly a billion people around the world.

The date was set in March because it is close to the Spring Equinox, a period when the most number of countries around the world will experience darkness in the 8 o’clock hour.

Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, Sea World in Orlando, the strip in Las Vegas, New York’s Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Washington D.C.’s National Cathedral, California’s Santa Monica Pier and the Space Needle in Seattle are among the hundreds of sites that will turn off non-essential lighting for the hour.

The City of Orlando is also having City Hall participate. Others in O…

Orlando Does Not Go To Crazy Town Like Topeka and Duluth

The City of Orlando’s application to Google to be a test site for the company’s experimental ultra high speed internet network just got “super-charged” with a $100,000 commitment from one of Florida’s leading philanthropies. Good timing: the application is due Friday March 26, 2010.

The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation, Inc. of Winter Park, Florida has committed up to $100,000 to help community nonprofits fully implement the ultra high speed internet network if Google selects Orlando.

This act of generosity is less ridiculous than the Mayor of Topeka, Kansas offering to change the name of his city to Google, Kansas. The Mayor of Duluth, Minnesota jumped into icy water. City staffers in Palo Alto, California danced to YMCA on video.

The City is reminding residents and businesses that Google wants to hear directly from them. They can let Google know that Orlando should be the company's choice by going to GetGoogling.com.

The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation is well recognized for c…

Jaron Lanier discusses "You Are Not a Gadget" book at Rollins College

Jaron Lanier, founding contributing editor of Wired magazine and the person who coined the term “virtual reality,” will discuss his new book "You Are Not a Gadget: The Musical Side of the Puzzle" in Tiedtke Concert Hall at Rollins College Thursday, April 22 at 7 pm. This event is free. More info.

Lanier is highly critical of Web 2.0, asserting that the digital hive is growing at the expense of individuality and creativity. He says that one of the downfalls of collective Internet culture is that we rely too much on groupthink. Outsider Art Fair 2010

by Mark Baratelli

Winter Park small business Frames Forever & Art Gallery (941 Orange Ave Winter Park, FL 32789) held the 2nd Annual Outsider Art Fair on Saturday March 20, 2010, timed to coincide with the 51st Annual Winter Part Sidewalk Arts Festival down the road.

The first site visitors saw at this frame shop-turned-event-space was performance artist Brian Feldman doing a sequel to sleepwalk, a piece he premiered at the 2009 Outsider Art Fair. In the first version, Feldman let people walk over him as he slept inside a case for 50 hours. This time around, he let people walk below him while he sleepwalked above them, hence the title sleepwalk: i walk over you. The ten foot high scaffolding and man-with-blanket was a draw to the drivers zooming by.

TheDailyCity.com Mobile Art Show #7 | A Thomas Thorspecken Retrospective

3-18-10 | TheDailyCity.com Mobile Art Show was honored to feature artist and blogger Thomas Thorspecken in its seventh show March 18, 2010. The crowd favorites were the six full sketch books laid open, allowing visitors to thumb through hundreds of the Thorspecken's vivid interpretation of events, people and places in the city of Orlando.

March 7, 2010 | In Winter Park, a mobile display called the Florida Modern-Day Slavery Museum was on display in front of a church on Park Avenue. The museum consists of a cargo truck outfitted as a replica of the trucks involved in a recent slavery operation (U.S. v. Navarrete, 2008), accompanied by displays on the history and evolution of slavery in Florida.

The museum's central focus is on the phenomenon of modern-day slavery – its roots, the reasons it persists, and its solutions. The exhibits were developed in consultation with workers who have escaped from forced labor operations as well as leading academic authorities on slavery and labor history in Florida.
