Postcard Plays

Here's a great idea:

"Here's a startling statistic: 9 out of 10 Americans have never received a postcard with a play written on it.

I'm outraged too. But we can piss and moan about this sorry state of affairs or we can act, and I have decided that it's time I did my part to heal this broken world. Therefore hear this: I will write you a play on a postcard and mail it to you. It will be new and just for you, and you can perform it with finger puppets at your kitchen table or simply read it in the bathroom. Together we can change an invented statistic. Will you join me in the fight?

To take part, email your address to I promise I won't drop by unannounced or share your info with anybody.

This is open to all, so invite anyone who may be a victim of our cultural neglect."

Eat More Produce Farm Market brings wholesale produce to Winter Park

Eat More Produce Farm Market (1111 Orlando Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789) is open for business. Its a work in progress but worth a stop to see what they're doing. Its not polished, breathtaking or even mostly local, but I see potential. You be the judge on this one.

There was some confusion in an earlier version of this post as to the address. I got the first version from a google search, which turned out to be incorrect. Then in February 2010 when I actually went inside the store, the owner gave me his card (a bag of peanuts) and on the bag was a sticker with the correct address, listed above. Below is the first version of this post.

Eat More Produce Farm Market (741 South Mills Avenue, Orlando, FL 32801), owned by Donald Gage, has officially opened. The address I got originally was one I found online. Its wrong. I don't have any new information. The location is on Mills, near the intersection of Mills Ave and Orange Ave.

Orlando Weekly "like an Apple Tablet, on paper"

The cover of this week's Orlando Weekly was topical:

Social Chameleon in the Milk District

UPDATE 1-31-10:A commenter (the Producer of the Orlando Fringe Festival) had some questions about this restaurant's hours of operations, so I drove there and asked them their hours directly. Here's the info I was given:Tuesday - Friday | 6pm-2am
Saturday | 5pm-2am
Sunday | 5pm-midnightWent to The Social Chameleon restaurant (2406 East Robinson Street, Orlando, FL 32803) in the Milk District with a friend. My photos do not do the food justice. Its yum. The space is teensy, the ceilings low and you can hear everyone else's conversation. I love it.

When you go (and I hope you do) introduce yourself to the owner, a wiry energetic dude who'll probably be in the kitchen. When it warms up, sit in the outside area. Super cozy. The Social Chameleon in Facebook.

Started with the dip trio: salsa, hummus and something green. All good.

Review: Terry Teachout's How to Write an Opera (In One Easy Lesson?)

Terry Teachout, Wall Street Journal theater critic and author
“How to Write an Opera (In One Easy Lesson?)”
Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, 12:30 – 2 p.m.
Keene Hall, Room 119, R.D. Keene Music Building, Rollins College

by Eric Pinder Opera Reviewer

Your intrepid correspondent got to Rollins with enough time to spare, picked up a berry smoothie from Powerhouse Cafe as a quick breakfast and headed over to the Bush Executive Center for the first talk with noted critic for the Wall Street Journal and other publications, Terry Teachout. In true Orlando fashion, every part of the building was named for either a donor or a corporation. The Sun Trust Auditorium was no exception. It's a lovely wood-paneled room with ornate metal chandeliers. Yours truly forgot to place the memory card back in the camera, so there are no pictures. You'll just have to imagine it - or visit it yourself sometime.

Martini Tuesday 1-19-10 at The Black Olive

The January 19, 2010 Martini Tuesday at The Black Olive brought out people like Chris, Musical Director of Winter Park Playhouse and Zac, Marketing Director of Mad Cow Theatre.

This weekly event (every Tuesday, 6pm-8pm) is a fun, cheap way to wind down after a long day. Free parking in The Plaza building (with validation). I like this event because {1} The Black Olive is a lovely space (well, the restaurant is lovely. The bar is kinda bland.) and {2} the martinis are three bucks.

PARMA Recordings LLC Composer and Winter Park Resident passes

PARMA Recordings LLC is a New England-based music company and classical music label. Its CEO Bob Lord wrote me with same sad news: one of his composers, Howard L. Richards, passed away yesterday. He lived in Winter Park. Lord said "We were just finalizing his new album featuring music for chorus and orchestra, to be released this spring on our label Navona and distributed by Naxos."

Morris's Market Update

Here's the latest update on Morris's Market and our effort to help them out:

The good news:
We spoke with the owners Sunday and they informed us on Friday January 15, 2010, they had their best Friday *ever* since opening June 2009. And according to the feedback the owners received from the shoppers that day, the owners attribute it 100% to this blog's readers. Also, they got a great write up on the Florida Agriculture blog and got their chili cook off eventonto the foodie website Yelp.

Otronicon 2010 Preview Party

I got to the January 14, 2010 preview party for Otronicon at Orlando Science Center late due to it being scheduled on the same night as the Broadway tour season reveal party which I chose to attend first. By the time I arrived it was a ghost town, but they still had my pre-printed name tag available and the lights on.

Unfortunately I read the invitation as well as I pay attention when people are speaking to me. I'm posting this on Sunday night and the whole event CLOSES Monday. Had no idea. Oops.

In any case, here are some highlights from my night as I carried plates of pasta and drank wine from a plastic cup.
