Fashon Square Mall on Twitter

Fashion Square Mall is on twitter and they're doing a good job sharing sale notices and movie openings. I would like to see photos/vid of the products they are talking about and link to the page where you buy movie tickets when they mention movie openings. And stop using the word "hot." But this is a good start and a good example of a follow-worthy twitter account from a business. Unexpected, right?________________________________________________

2009 Visual Fringe: applications availabe

The 2009 Visual Fringe applications are now online.

Visual Fringe is the visual art component of the Orlando Fringe Festival. (View The Daily City's 2009 Fringe Guide) During the festival, the walls of the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre and the Patrons' room are filled with art submitted by YOU, whether you're an emerging artist or a well-known, established one. Visual Fringe is uncensored and unjuried and 100% of the money made in art sales is given back to YOU, the artist.

2008 was a record-breaking year for Visual Fringe: Not only did more artists than in previous years participate; more artwork was sold than ever before.

Artists are encouraged to create art that is experimental, unique, beautiful and fringy; something that pushes their limits as artists, such as trying a new medium, subject or motivating factor.________________________________________________

Battle of the Web Frameworks

Battle of the Web Frameworks: If you had to build a website from scratch, which technology would you use to do it? Would you use an older more established framework, or a framework on the cutting edge of technology? How would you begin to make an informed comparison and an educated business decision? What if you could throw each web framework into thunder dome, watch them battle to the death, and see which emerged the sole survivor?

On April 9th, 2009 four web frameworks will duke it out in "Doterati Arena," aiming to prove once and for all who has the right to wear the framework championship belt. (Event Invitation) The fight will consist of 4 rounds of 15 minute talks where each framework contender will tell you why you should use their own, and why their competition just doesn't make the grade.

Although the fight will inevitably contain much blood, sweat and tears, in the end the audience members will be the final judge as to who will emerge victorious (at least until n…

Cat-Hat Revolution

Orlandoean Mike Gill started a Facebook group after seeing photos of Arabella Fisher and Brandon Roberts... wearing their cats. The idea is called "Cat Hat.""The secret is, you have to make them all relaxed first... then very slowly place cat on your head before they realize what you're doing... BAM. Cat-hat!"Joseph Fletcher, Brandon Roberts, Mark Koenig, Megan Mayo, Pat Braillard also deserve credit as the first cat-hatters, pre-Facebook group. It has 60 members as of 10:30am, but Mike says "merely JOINING is half the battle. Get a cat. Put it on yo head... Take a photo... and post it on the group site."

Several people have done so and the effect is hilarious.

"Quick, do it, before you think too much about it and realize how truly ridiculous it is," says Mike. I agree.

And if you twitter your cat hat photos, use the hashtag #cathat.

Media soon needless to Arts orgs?

Great post on Americans for the Arts Blog March 24th called Institutions as Media Outlets about a shift from depending on the media to get the word out about your events, to getting the word out... yourself: "A huge shift in communications is about to occur away from organizations pitching stories to mainstream media for coverage and toward setting up institutional distribution channels to cover stories themselves. We have seen this in the past decade as the ways we communicate with our customers have become cheaper, quicker and more segmented. We now have e-mail lists, websites, direct mail, telemarketing, social networking, online video distribution, podcasts, photo streams, and blogs. Some large organizations can currently reach more than one million people using these distribution channels. Considering the New York Times has a circulation of 1.6 million, these distribution channels which used to be considered on the fringes of communications have become almost as powerful for…

New Middle School Fad: Smoking Smarties

"The phenomenon of smoking Smarties -- a candy that has been around for six decades... has led to dozens of how-to videos...

Some of the children attempting the feat are caught on camera hacking in a spew reminiscent of a smoker's cough. Others have perfected the art of blowing Smarties smoke rings; some can even exhale through their nose. Children don't inhale the powder or try to get it into their lungs; they pour it into their mouths and exhale quickly, causing a cloud of fine dust to emerge.

Oren Friedman, a Mayo Clinic nose specialist, cautioned that frequent use could lead to infections or even worse, albeit rare, conditions, such as maggots that feed on sugary dust wedged inside the nose."________________________________________________

Theatre Communications Group Survey

In December 2008 and January 2009, the board of directors of Theatre Communications Group reached out to it's 495 member theatres to gauge the state of the field. These conversations generated an executive summary available in pdf called "The New Normal." Here are the good parts, full of neat ideas:Several theatres mentioned reducing the number of Equity actors in the current season and planning further reductions for next season

Know Theatre (Cincinnati, OH) has eliminated all but one matinee per run (on the final weekend) and seen an increase in attendance at evening performances. This allowed them to extend the run, giving them more time for word-of-mouth to build up. The show they just closed was the first with the new schedule and it has been their highest grossing so far this season.

Our theatres are turning to blogs, email, newsletters, the phone and in-person face time to connect with donors, subscribers, community members, artists and boards. Many are phoning each…

Steal this idea: Carsharing in Washington DC

I saw this sign while walking through Washington DC yesterday and had to share it. Carsharing? Here's what I found online about it:DDOT is committed to reducing congestion and parking problems with innovative transportation options such as carsharing, a network of privately owned vehicles that are rented by the hour or day. Carsharing provides the mobility of a car without the expense and hassle of car ownership. A low emission and environmentally friendly fleet of cars is located near Metro stations and neighborhood centers throughout DC.

For an annual fee of roughly $25 and for an hourly fee of about $8, residents can obtain the use of a car without the large costs associated with purchase. The hourly charges cover insurance, fuel, maintenance, and the rental rate. Depending on usage, this can be cheaper than owning a car. DDOT is partnering with Zipcar and Flexcar. Carsharing locations and program details are available on these sites.Yeah ok, in Orlando you need a car, but maybe…

Museums reach out with innovation

Arts orgs are looking at every single way to engage audiences and bring them (and their dollars) in right now. Here's one example:Some 150 yoga fanatics, mats in hand, gathered in the second-floor atrium of the Museum of Modern Art one recent Saturday morning. They were there to “Put the oM in MoMA,” as the invitation read.

Assembled in a circle, the group practiced poses while on the walls surrounding them flowed giant images of budding tulips, slithering worms and a pig in a verdant meadow biting into a juicy apple, all part of the Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist’s monumental video installation “Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters).” The free 75-minute class was such a success that there is talk of holding another in the museum’s sculpture garden.

“In these difficult times we want to hit as many buttons as we can,” said Glenn D. Lowry, director of the museum. “We’re doing everything possible to connect with people.”________________________________________________

Pillowlando: April 4, 2009

If you enjoyed last year's Pillowlando (video), it's back April 4, 2009, 5pm-5:30pm, at Duncan Park at SunTrust Center, 246 S Orange Ave, Orlando, FL. (MAP) Produced by Brian Feldman Projects. PILLOWLANDO9 is Orlando’s “Official 2009 World Pillow Fight Day Event,” timed to coincide with pillow fights in cities all over the world; and (currently) the only event of its kind in the state of Florida. You can learn more about this by visiting www.pillowfightday.com.

Essentially, people will bring a pillow to Duncan Park at SunTrust Center at 5:00pm and then wait for the signal. At that time, pillows will swing and whack as those assembled experience a massive urban pillow fight. It’s free and a whole lot of fun.

Orlandoans who love free, fun, public events like pillow fights, creative interventions, games and interactive art installations are invited to show up and take part, as well as all curious tourists and other Central Floridians who find out about it as the event draws near.
