I was talking my mid-morning walk through Audubon Park and saw a gathering at the Audubon Park Covenant Church.

It turned out to be the Audubon Park Community Market which happens from 9am-2pm every Saturday: "...local organic produce, healthy local food, vegan and vegetarian selections, green home materials and education, massage, fine art, sustainable and functional crafts, educational speakers, live local music, handmade clothes and kid's educational activities."

I met the owner of who told me about how hard it was to find a place for her to sell her allergen-free baked goods. I tried a chocloate chip muffin: yum!

Then I met the owner of Seven Sisters CoffeeHouse, Alisha Kerns. Seven Sisters CoffeeHouse is a coffeehouse opening up on Mills in the near future. Seven Sisters Coffee provides coffee from sustainable, organic, fairly traded , and relationship coffee farms. Their house coffee comes from Sel…

Drunken Monkey packed

The Fringe festival had me embedding Fringe Crush videos to the official blog all night, so I went to the Drunken Monkey coffee shop to work in peace. I got here around 4pm. All quiet. As night fell, the place got slammed. But not with your usual hipsters. There were families, old people, kids, and a few hipsters sitting in the corner staring at what seemed to be a church supper. Very refreshing.

Orlando Fringe: Hogg hearts Cody Rivers Show

Jimmy Hogg, of last year's Cirriculum Vitae and of this year's A Brief History of Petty Crime, really likes The Cody Rivers Show. So much so, he brought them to Toronto for four performances:"I've seen them twice on my travels across North America and I don't exaggerate when I say it's the best sketch comedy I've seen. You'd be a fool to miss it."And here are some reviews Jimmy shared:"After seeing The Cody Rivers Show everything else will seem less captivating and far less physically fit." -Time Out New York.

"The Cody Rivers Show was absolutely mesmerizing. Forgive me: I didn't, actually couldn't, write anything down. From moment one could tear their eyes away." -Time Out Chicago

"It feels like a theatrical tornado, and when you get spat out the other side, you won't know what hit you, but you'll be happy that it did." -The Globe and Mail

First show audience important: Orlando Fringe

Artists are aware that buzz starts early in the festival. If you can get people to your show early on, preferably your first show, and they like it, you have a shot at getting the word out through them.

This year, I've seen two groups with creative ways to get people to their opening performance.

The dance company Drip has a ton of schwag to give out at their opening performance including "art, Fringe tickets, Lululemon yoga-inspired clothing and beer tent tickets." Wow!

The new Orlando sketch group The Executives, formed by SAK's Chase Padgett, is making the audience breakfast for their opening.

If you hear of any other types of stunts to bring in first-performance audiences, let us know. And, if you attend either of the two mentioned, let us know how they went.

@thedailycity- All the scathing, rotten gossip I can find (which is never much) and of course photos and links and videos I make while I am out there scavenging for content.

@orlandofringe- The official one. I set it up in 2007 for them and now @brianfeldman is running it for 2009. Funny guy and good person to run the account.

@BethFringe- She is the festival's producer.

@emaupin- The Sentinel theatre reviewer. Mostly posts links to her reviews, which are helpful.

@bloggingfringe- This is run by @liberatr, but he has the account on auto-pilot, auto-re-tweeting any tweet in the twitter-verse that has the word "fringe" in it.

Dance Review
A Night With Nao Dance
by Tisse Mallon

4/26/08: Nao Dance, Central Florida's newest improvisational dance company, presented an event at The Center for Contemporary Dance to introduce itself to the community. They performed an excerpt from the show they are currently working on: Alice Takes Wonderland, held a Q & A with the audience, and worked a raw improv piece with beautiful energy. One of the best moments was when an audience member asked the dancers what other areas of art they work in. The answers, ranging from singing to writing to parenting provided an insight to dancers not usually shared.

April 26, 2008

This has been THE arts event of the year! Three warehouses full of art and music, covered with awesome graffiti, and an atmosphere of collaborative creativity... need I say more? The quality of the work was impressive. While an amazing 1200 people attended throughout the day (from noon until 2am) I was shocked at the empty spaces... namely on the dancefloor. What's up with that?

Photowalk May 10

Photo: Jen Vargas

What is Photowalking?
Photowalking is the act of walking with a camera for the main purpose of taking pictures of things you may find interesting. While not exclusive to digital photography, in practice digital photography makes Photowalking more realistic as a hobby due to its experimental nature, the number of pictures typically taken in the process, and the possibility of post-processing afterward.

Photowalking's main impetus is to photograph things of interest rather than people specifically. It is also often done as a method to practice and improve one's own photography skills rather than a with specific focus on documentary photography. Photowalking is also a form of exercise as it can take the photographer over the course of several miles as they wander a particular site or neighborhood.*
