Diana Lucas Leavengood of St Petersburg in Kentucky gallery

(St. Petersburg, FL) January 21, 2008 – Diana Lucas Leavengood’s Self Portrait w/Last Cigarette #3 has been selected to be part of Self-Evident: Contemporary American Self-Portraiture, an exhibition featuring artwork that explores identity and self representation. Forty-four artists from across the United States will be on display at the Claypool-Young Art Gallery at Morehead State University (Morehead, KY) from January 30 to February 20.
Self Portrait w/Last Cigarette #3 is the latest (and hopefully last) installment of Diana Lucas Leavengood's ongoing documentation of her smoking cessation attempts. Self-Portrait w/Last Cigarette #1 was selected for the Spring Salon in Toronto last year. Self-Portrait w/Last Cigarette #2 was briefly displayed in May on the race boat at the Davis Island Yacht club where is caused a scene and had to be put away.

Yes, Viginia, there IS an Orlando piano bar

Luerne Herrera and Jason Wetzel
"The Wetzel and I"
2006

In New York City, there's a dive bar in the village called Marie's Crisis. In that piano bar, nightly, you will find (a) a piano player, (b) a piano and (c) a gaggle of gays and their hags sangin' Broadway songs en masse. It's retardedly amazing. It's so weird at first, but once you get into it, you're addiced, you go at least once a week, slug a few back and join in the My Fair Lady medley. At least I did in 2004.

In Orlando, there used to be a weekly event similar to this (and just as fab) at the Parliament House. It differed slightly. Instead of the entire room singing together, the pianist accompanied brave soloists as the gaggle watched. That pianist was Kelly Richards. This guy was the heart and soul of those nights. He could play anything, in any key and has the smile and charm and heart that makes the whole room feel comfy. The event sadly went away when he got a job that interfered with his …

Monochrom at Red Light Red Light

An Evening with monochrom
Monochrom is an art-technology-philosophy group having its seat in Vienna and Zeta Draconis. monochrom is an unpeculiar mixture of proto-aesthetic fringe work, pop attitude, subcultural science, context hacking and political activism. Our mission is conducted everywhere, but first and foremost in culture-archeological digs into the seats (and pockets) of ideology and entertainment.

Additional description from Ian Monroe:
You've never heard of monochrom ? Well, then you haven't been paying attention. If you had, you would have seen them just the other day on Boing Boing collecting barcodes http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.giffor Falco. Maybe you would have seen them demonstrating how to install a USB interface into a human spine or singing an 8-bit love song to/about Creative Commons mastermind Lawrence Lessig.

Or maybe you're a Luddite, and you hate the internet. Perhaps you'd be more familiar with Georg Paul Thomann, the fictional artist t…

Cabaret Party January 20

Ever want to be in a room full of musical theatre nuts who can finish any line from any musical from any period? Me neither. But don't judge a songbook by it's cover. The event called "Cabaret Party" is something you need to experience monthly. Singers, and those who wish to be, sign up to sing with a live pianist (Jason Wetzel) on a first-come, first-served basis. They get up, one by one, and sing their songs. You sit at your table, drink in hand, and judge. The good singers make you cheer. The bad ones make you snap covert photos to show your friends later.

When:
Sunday January 20th
Doors open at 7:30pm
Party begins 8pm till ?

Where:
Orlando Shakespeare Theatre
Loch Haven Park

Price:
$12 regular / $10 industry (cash only)
Orlando Shakespeare Theatre serves wine, beer, and coffee and accepts

Reader Feedback

"With a plethora of articles and reviews, The Daily City also acts as a newsletter-calendar hybrid for me. For years, I’ve complained about never having one aggregated source of upcoming events in Orlando that is actually accurate. Thanks to the socially advanced heavens (and Mark), The Daily City is a well-manicured and marvelously maintained site that I can always depend on for a current calendar and a review of Orlando’s latest hot-spot. Now my day consists of waking up, putting on a cup of joe, opening my computer, going to thedailycity.com — well, going to my Facebook page — then going to The Daily City and seeing what’s going on in Orlando. Yesterday, Beth and I went to our first Food Truck Pod behind Firestone — thanks to Mark and his team. Now you are looking at the newest member of Food Truck Groupies!-Why Are you Awesome? | May 16, 2011 "Maybe, like me, you’re one of the readers who rely upon (Mark Baratelli's) indispensable arts and events website TheDailyCity.…
